Vätternrundan is 315 kilometres around Sweden's second-largest lake, starting and finishing in Motala. It is one of the longest single-day sportives in the world and the largest cycling event in Scandinavia — roughly 25,000 riders line up every mid-June. But the distance is only part of the story. The event starts in the early evening, rides through the Swedish midsummer night, and finishes the following morning. You will be on the bike for 12 to 18 hours. You will ride in the dark. You will get cold. You will question, somewhere around 3am on the western shore of the lake, whether you want to keep going. The riders who finish well are the ones who planned for all of that before they left home. What Makes Vätternrundan Different from Every Other Sportive
The distance is genuine ultra-endurance territory. 315 kilometres is not a long sportive. It is an ultra-distance event. For context, the Mallorca 312 is 312km and takes most riders 10-14 hours in daylight and Mediterranean warmth. Vätternrundan covers essentially the same distance but adds darkness, cold, and sleep deprivation. The longest training ride most amateur cyclists have completed is 150-180km. This event is nearly double that. Every system in your body — muscular, digestive, thermoregulatory, cognitive — operates differently at hour 14 than it does at hour 6, and no amount of reading about it replaces the experience of riding through it.
The night changes everything. Most sportives run in daylight. You start in the morning, ride through the afternoon, and finish before sunset. Vätternrundan inverts that. The start is around 7pm. By 10pm you are deep into the ride and the light is fading. Between midnight and 3:30am, even at Swedish midsummer latitude (58 degrees north), the sky darkens enough that you need lights. Your body's circadian rhythm is screaming at you to sleep. Your power output drops. Your appetite disappears. Your judgement degrades — and you have 150km still to ride. Riders who have never ridden through the night before discover something uncomfortable: the mental challenge of staying on the bike at 2am is harder than any climb.
The temperature swing is the hidden threat. You start in 15-18 degrees and shirtsleeve comfort. Six hours later it is 3-5 degrees and your hands are numb. That 12-15 degree drop happens gradually, which is what makes it dangerous — you do not notice the cold creeping in until your core temperature has already dropped. Riders in summer kit at midnight are the ones sitting in checkpoints wrapped in foil blankets at 2am, and many of them do not restart. The clothing strategy for Vätternrundan is more complex than for any alpine sportive because the range is wider and the consequences of getting it wrong are a DNF, not just discomfort.
The mental game is the event. There is no signature climb to conquer, no dramatic col to tick off. The terrain is rolling, the scenery is forests and farmland, and the physical demand at any given moment is moderate. What breaks riders is the accumulation — 12, 14, 16 hours of moderate effort, rising fatigue, declining temperature, the small hours of the night, and 80km still to go when the sun comes up. This is where Vätternrundan sits apart from every climbing-focused sportive in Europe. The challenge is not what you can produce. It is what you can endure.
The Course: What You Are Actually Riding
Motala to Jönköping (km 0-100): The Warm-Up You Must Not Waste
The first 100 kilometres run south along the eastern shore of Lake Vättern. The road is gently rolling — short 1-2 minute rises through forest and farmland, nothing sustained, nothing steep. The light is good, the temperature is comfortable, and the field is dense. This is where 90% of riders make their first mistake: riding too hard. The groups are fast, the atmosphere is electric, and holding 60-65% FTP feels absurdly easy on fresh legs at 8pm. But this section exists to set up the next 215km. Ride it at high Zone 2. Eat from the first hour. Stay in a group but do not chase surges. Every watt you overspend here is a watt you do not have at 3am.
Jönköping to Hjo (km 100-180): The Night Section
The southern tip of the lake and the climb up the western shore. This is where the event reveals itself. The light fades through this section. The temperature drops. The field thins as riders spread out. The terrain is still rolling — no single climb is longer than a couple of minutes — but the accumulated fatigue from the first 100km starts registering. Jönköping itself has a major checkpoint: eat real food here, refill bottles with warm liquid if available, add your thermal layer. The western shore from Jönköping to Hjo is exposed to wind off the lake and the temperature drops fastest here. Riders who left Jönköping in a jersey and shorts arrive in Hjo shivering, and the shivering burns glycogen at a rate that compounds the fuelling problem. This is the section where Vätternrundan is won or lost.
Hjo to Askersund via Omberg (km 180-260): The Climb and the Dawn
Omberg is the only proper climb on the course — approximately 3 kilometres at 5-6%, which would be nothing on fresh legs at 10am but arrives at roughly 3-4am on legs that have been turning for 10 hours. The gradient is not the problem. The timing is. Your power output at this point is 15-20% below your rested capacity, your core temperature is at its lowest, and the climb pitches up just enough to hurt without being steep enough to force you out of the saddle and generate warmth. Ride Omberg at high Zone 2 — steady cadence, seated, no surges. Riders who attack it because it is the one climb on the course pay for it across the remaining 60km. After Omberg, the route continues north along the eastern shore. Dawn arrives around 3:30-4am this far north in mid-June, and the psychological lift is enormous. The temperature starts climbing. Appetite returns. The final 80km feel different from the previous 80km in every way.
Askersund to Motala (km 260-315): The Finish You Have to Earn
The final 55 kilometres are deceptively hard. The terrain is the same gently rolling farmland as the opening section, but you are now 14-16 hours into the ride. Your sit bones hurt. Your hands are stiff. Your stomach may have shut down. The temptation is to push for the finish, and many riders do — they increase effort for the final stretch and then bonk spectacularly 20km from Motala. Hold the same power you have been holding all night. Eat whatever your stomach will accept. The finish line in Motala is not going anywhere. Riders who negative-split the final section — riding the last 55km at the same or slightly lower effort than the preceding section — finish faster than riders who surge, because the surge costs a stop, and the stop costs 20 minutes.

Raw watts matter less here than they do at any climbing sportive. A rider at 2.8 W/kg who paces perfectly, eats consistently, and stays warm through the night will finish hours ahead of a rider at 3.2 W/kg who goes out too hard, underfuels, and loses 90 minutes shivering at a checkpoint at 3am. But a single extended stop costs 30-60 minutes, and the rider who stops once almost always stops twice.
The 16-Week Training Structure
Phase 1: Base (Weeks 1-6)
Volume: 8-10 hours per week, building to 12 by week 6.
The aerobic base is the foundation of every ultra-distance effort. Four to five rides per week, 80% in Zone 2. The long ride builds from 3 hours to 5 hours across this block. Polarised training — the kind Professor Seiler has built his career researching — is the framework. That means properly easy riding for 80% of the volume. Not "feels easy." Actually easy. Heart rate in the lower half of Zone 2, conversational pace, no surging on hills.
One quality session per week: 3x10 minutes at 90-95% FTP with 5 minutes recovery. Standard threshold work to maintain intensity tolerance while the volume builds underneath.
Off-the-bike work matters in this block. Two sessions per week of lower-body stability: lunges, single-leg press, step-ups, core planks and side planks. The saddle contact hours in Vätternrundan are extreme — 12-18 hours — and the riders who crack physically in the final quarter are almost always the ones whose core gave out, not their legs. No heavy barbell work. The goal is postural endurance, not peak force.
Phase 2: Build (Weeks 7-12)
Volume: 11-14 hours per week. This is where the event-specific preparation begins.
Long rides extend to 7-8 hours. By the end of week 10, you need to have completed at least one ride of 7 hours or longer. This is non-negotiable. Vätternrundan is a 12-18 hour event. If your longest training ride is 5 hours, you are guessing about what hours 6 through 14 feel like, and the guess will be wrong. The 7-8 hour ride does not need to be fast — ride it at 60-65% FTP, practise your fuelling, and get comfortable with the saddle discomfort that arrives at hour 5 and either resolves or does not.
Night riding practice starts now. At least two training rides should include 3-4 hours of riding in the dark. This is not optional. Pick a Friday evening: leave at 9pm, ride until 1am, come home. The first time you ride at midnight on an empty road in the dark, your perception of effort, speed, and distance changes completely. Food tastes different. Your sense of pace warps. Corners feel sharper than they are. You need to experience this before Sweden, not for the first time during the event. The second night ride should be longer — 5-6 hours, including the period from 11pm to 4am if possible.
Two quality sessions per week. One threshold session (4x12 minutes at 95-100% FTP building to 3x16 minutes by week 12). One sustained tempo session (2x40 minutes at 78-85% FTP on rolling terrain). The tempo work mirrors what the majority of Vätternrundan actually demands — sustained moderate effort on gently rolling roads.
Back-to-back weekends. At least two weekends in this block should be stacked: Saturday 5-6 hours at endurance pace, Sunday 3-4 hours on tired legs. The second-day ride teaches your body to produce power on accumulated fatigue, which is the exact physiological state you will be in from km 200 onwards.
Phase 3: Sharpen (Weeks 13-14)
Volume holds at 12-14 hours in week 13, then begins dropping.
The 200km+ test ride. This is the centrepiece of the sharpening block. One ride of 200-250km at race effort — 60-65% FTP, full fuelling rehearsal at 60-90g carbs per hour, the clothing you plan to wear, the lights you plan to use. Ideally this ride starts in the late afternoon and runs into the night, simulating the Vätternrundan start. This ride tells you everything: whether your saddle works at hour 8, whether your lights are bright enough, whether your stomach handles rice cakes at midnight, whether your thermal layer fits under your jersey without restricting movement. Every problem you discover on this ride is a problem you can fix. Every problem you discover at Vätternrundan is a problem you endure.
One more night ride in this block, shorter (3-4 hours), focused on dialling in the lighting setup and the food you will carry through the dark section.
Phase 4: Taper (Weeks 15-16)
Volume drops 30-40% in week 15, another 40-50% in week 16. Short intensity stays — 3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max — to keep the legs sharp without adding fatigue. The long ride in week 15 is 3 hours. The long ride in week 16 is 90 minutes. No rides longer than 2 hours in the final 5 days.
The taper is where most riders panic. You will feel sluggish. Your legs will feel heavy. You will convince yourself that you are losing fitness. You are not. The training stress score calculator will confirm that your chronic load is still high — what is dropping is acute fatigue, and that is precisely the point. The fitness is in. Trust it.
Night Riding: The Skill Most Riders Neglect
Lighting Setup
You need two systems: a bar-mounted light for the road ahead and a helmet-mounted light for cornering. The bar light should be 800-1,200 lumens minimum — bright enough to read the road surface at 30km/h. The helmet light can be lower (400-600 lumens) and serves as directional lighting for corners and junctions. Carry a spare rear light. Battery life is critical — the dark period at Vätternrundan's latitude in mid-June is roughly 4-5 hours (approximately 10:30pm to 3:30am). If your main lights run for 4 hours on the highest setting, you will run them dry. Use medium brightness for straight road and save the high beam for descents and junctions. Charge fully the morning of the event. Test every connection.
Sleep Management
You will not sleep during Vätternrundan. The question is how to manage the consequences of riding through the night without sleep.
Caffeine is the primary tool, but timing matters. If you drink coffee all evening, you will have a caffeine crash at 3am — exactly when you need it most. Hold caffeine until midnight. One strong coffee or a 200mg caffeine gel at midnight, another at 3am. That gives you two peaks across the hardest section. If you normally drink 3-4 coffees a day, reduce caffeine intake in the 3 days before the event to resensitise.
Sleep the afternoon before. The event starts around 7pm. A 90-minute nap between 1pm and 3pm banks rest without disrupting your circadian rhythm. Set an alarm. Riders who sleep 3 hours and wake groggy at 5pm start the event already behind.
Temperature Management
The layering system for Vätternrundan is more important than the bike setup. A starting temperature of 15-18 degrees dropping to 3-5 degrees requires planning.
Start in a short-sleeve jersey with arm warmers and a gilet in the back pocket. At the Jönköping checkpoint (roughly km 100), add the gilet. By Hjo (roughly km 160-180), you need a long-sleeve thermal base layer under the jersey, full-finger gloves, a neck buff, and potentially knee warmers or leg warmers. If your drop bag is at Hjo, pack these items in it. If you are carrying everything, a lightweight merino base layer and a windproof gilet together weigh under 300g and fit in two jersey pockets.
The hands and feet go cold first. Full-finger gloves from midnight onwards. Overshoes or at minimum thick socks. Cold hands cannot brake properly, cannot open food, cannot operate a head unit. Cold feet become numb and pedalling efficiency drops. These are not comfort items. They are performance equipment.
After dawn (3:30-4am), the temperature rises quickly. Strip layers at the next checkpoint rather than overheating — sweating into a thermal base layer at 6am creates a new set of problems.
Group Riding at Night
Ride in a group through the dark section whenever possible. Groups are safer (more visible to traffic), warmer (wind protection), and psychologically easier (having other riders around at 2am is the single biggest factor in staying on the bike). If you arrive at the Jönköping checkpoint with a group, stay with them. If you arrive alone, wait 5-10 minutes for the next cluster and roll out together. Solo night riding across the western shore of the lake in near-darkness at 3 degrees is where the highest DNF rate occurs — it does not need to be solo.
Hold wheels, take short turns at the front, communicate clearly. Hand signals are useless in the dark — verbal calls for holes, turns, and slowing. Front and rear lights visible to the group. Agree on a pace. The group that holds 28km/h together finishes faster than the rider who pushes 32km/h alone and stops twice.
Gearing
Vätternrundan is not a climbing event, but the gearing choice still matters across 315km and 1,800m of rolling elevation. A compact chainset (50/34) with an 11-30 or 11-32 cassette handles everything on the course. Omberg's 5-6% is the steepest sustained gradient, and a 34x30 provides approximately 75rpm at 20km/h — comfortable enough on tired legs at 3am. The trap is undergearing for the flats. Most of the course is ridden at 28-35km/h on rolling terrain. If your smallest gear combination spins out at 38km/h, you lose efficiency in every group where the pace lifts on a downhill or with a tailwind. A 50x11 top end is sufficient for anything the course produces.
Do not change your gearing in the final two weeks before the event. Whatever you have trained on is what your legs expect. A new cassette ratio at the last minute changes your cadence at every gradient, and at hour 12 your legs will notice.
Fuelling Across 12-18 Hours
This is the make-or-break factor. A 15-hour ride at moderate intensity demands 900-1,350g of carbohydrate on the bike. That is a number most amateur cyclists have never come close to in a single ride. Train it before Sweden.

Solid food is non-negotiable. Gels alone will not sustain you for 15 hours. By hour 8, the thought of another gel triggers genuine nausea in most riders. Pack real food: rice cakes with jam, small sandwiches (white bread, honey), salted boiled potatoes, fig rolls, malt loaf. The checkpoints at Vätternrundan serve food — eat what is on offer. A warm bowl of soup at 3am does more for your morale and your stomach than three gels ever could.
The appetite crash. Between midnight and 4am, your appetite will disappear. This is a circadian response, not a fuelling problem — your body does not want to eat at 2am regardless of caloric demand. Eat anyway. Small bites every 15-20 minutes. Liquid calories (maltodextrin drink, flat cola) go down easier than solid food in this window. Riders who stop eating because they do not feel hungry bonk at dawn, exactly when the temperature is rising and the end is within reach.
Hydration in the cold. You will not feel thirsty at 3am in 5-degree air. You are still losing fluid — exertion and respiration dehydrate you even in cold conditions. Aim for 400-500ml per hour through the night section, with electrolytes. At checkpoints, fill one bottle with a warm drink if available — warm fluid is easier to absorb in the cold and it raises core temperature marginally. When the sun comes up and the temperature climbs, increase to 500-750ml per hour. Pre-event loading. Carb-load 24-36 hours before: 8-10g per kilogram of body weight. A 75kg rider eats 600-750g of carbs across the day before. Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes — plain, easily digested, nothing new. Eat a substantial meal 3-4 hours before the 7pm start. A smaller snack — a banana and a white bread sandwich — 60-90 minutes before.
Weather and Temperature
Swedish midsummer is not warm by southern European standards, and the overnight profile is the defining weather feature.
Daytime (start, 7pm). Typical conditions: 15-20 degrees, light winds, long evening light. The sun does not set until after 10pm at this latitude in mid-June, and the sky stays light until nearly 11pm. UV is low by this hour — sunscreen is not a priority for the start, but it matters from dawn onwards if you are still riding at 6-7am.
Overnight (11pm-4am). The temperature drops steadily. 10-12 degrees by midnight, 6-8 degrees by 2am, potentially 3-5 degrees at the coldest point around 3-4am. The lake moderates temperatures slightly on the shore road, but the exposed sections on the western side feel colder due to wind off the water. Use the wind chill calculator to understand what 5 degrees at 30km/h actually feels like on exposed skin — the answer is below zero. Dew forms on road surfaces in the early hours, making descents slippery. The overnight section demands respect.
Dawn onwards (4am-finish). The temperature recovers quickly after sunrise (approximately 3:30am). By 6am it is 10-12 degrees, by 8am it can reach 15 degrees again. The light returns gradually — the sky brightens well before the sun appears, and the psychological effect on riders is immediate. The dawn section is where riders who managed the night well start gaining on riders who did not.
Rain. Mid-June in central Sweden is not a dry guarantee. Rain at 4 degrees overnight turns a hard ride into a dangerous one. Check the forecast 48 hours out and pack a lightweight rain jacket if there is any chance. A 100g emergency rain shell weighing nothing in the pocket is the cheapest insurance available.
Race Day Pacing
Km 0-100 (7pm-11pm): Conservation, not demonstration. 60-65% FTP, full stop. The field will surge off the start. Groups will form at 33-35km/h. Find a group riding at your target pace — not faster, not slower — and sit in. Eat every 20-30 minutes. Drink every 15 minutes. Do not lead into headwinds for more than 2 minutes at a time. Your heart rate should feel boring. If it feels like an effort, you are riding too hard. The riders passing you at km 50 are the same riders you will pass at km 220.
Km 100-200 (11pm-3am): Survival, managed well. This is the decisive section. The pace drops naturally — colder air, darker roads, rising fatigue. Accept it. Ride at 55-60% FTP. Stay with a group. Eat to schedule, not appetite. Add layers before you feel cold, not after. The checkpoints at Jönköping and Hjo are your logistical anchors: eat real food, fill bottles, add clothing, use the bathroom, leave within 10-15 minutes. Riders who sit down at checkpoints for 30 minutes lose more than 30 minutes — the restart is harder than the riding.
Km 200-260 (3am-5am): Omberg and the dawn. Omberg arrives with perfect dramatic timing — the lowest point of the night, the coldest temperature, the most accumulated fatigue. Do not attack it. 3km at 5-6% is 8-12 minutes of effort. Ride it seated, high Zone 2, steady cadence. The climb time calculator can model your expected time based on current fitness. After the summit, the dawn section along the eastern shore is psychologically the easiest part of the ride — the light returns, the temperature rises, and the finish is 55-80km away. Do not accelerate. Hold the pace.
Km 260-315 (5am-finish): The final discipline. The last 55km is where the pacing strategy either pays off or it does not. Riders who managed the night well arrive here tired but functional. Riders who did not arrive here broken. The temptation to push for the finish is real and should be resisted. Hold 60-65% FTP. Eat whatever your stomach will tolerate. Drink. The finish in Motala will be there whether you arrive at 8am or 10am. The rider who holds a steady 27km/h for the final 55km finishes faster than the rider who pushes 32km/h for 30km and then stops for 25 minutes.

How many hours should I be training per week for Vätternrundan? Peak volume should reach 12-16 hours per week in the build phase (weeks 7-12). That is not a target for every week — it is the high-water mark for the biggest weeks, bracketed by recovery weeks at 8-10 hours. Most riders can build an effective programme on 10-12 hours per week with the right structure. The quality of the training matters more than the quantity: two 6-hour rides with fuelling practice and a night section are worth more than four 3-hour rides at tempo.
Can I ride Vätternrundan on a time-trial or aero bike? You can, and some fast riders do. But 315km on a TT bike is a different kind of suffering to 315km on a road bike. The aero position compresses the diaphragm, reduces hip angle, and limits the ability to shift position through the night. Saddle pressure compounds over 15 hours. If you are targeting sub-12 hours and you are truly comfortable on your TT bike for 8+ hours, the aero advantage is real — perhaps 30-60 minutes across the distance. For everyone else, a road bike with a comfortable fit and reliable shifting is the right choice. The race is long enough that comfort is speed.
Should I do Vätternrundan solo or with a group? With a group. Always. The drafting advantage on flat-to-rolling terrain saves 20-30% of your energy output, which across 315km is the difference between finishing strong and finishing wrecked — or not finishing at all. The psychological support of riding with other people through the night section is arguably worth more than the aerodynamic benefit. Find a group at your target pace early and commit to it.
What bike maintenance do I need before the event? Fresh chain, fresh brake pads, fresh bar tape. Tyres with at least 80% tread remaining — a puncture at 3am on a dark Swedish road is miserable. Carry two inner tubes, a mini-pump and CO2, tyre levers, and a multi-tool. Check the headset, bottom bracket, and wheel bearings for play. Charge your head unit, front light, rear light, and helmet light fully the morning of. Vätternrundan is too long for mechanical optimism.
What if I have never ridden more than 200km before? Then the 200km test ride in week 13-14 is the most important session in the entire plan. Treat it as a dress rehearsal. If 200km in training breaks you, 315km at the event will not go better. The test ride gives you an honest answer: either you are ready, or you need more preparation. There is no shame in deferring to the following year — Vätternrundan runs every June, and a well-prepared finish is worth more than a traumatic survival.
