What Makes the Tour of Wessex Different
The multi-day format changes the training problem. Most UK sportives are single-day efforts. You pace yourself, fuel well, and ride home. The Tour of Wessex asks a fundamentally different question: can you ride hard today, recover tonight, and ride hard again tomorrow? And then do it a third time. That consecutive-day demand is the defining characteristic. Riders who train exclusively with single long rides — even very long ones — find that the second morning is a rude education in cumulative fatigue. The training must include back-to-back days. There is no substitute.
The gradient profile is nothing like Alpine climbing. Alpine sportives involve long, steady climbs of 10-20km at 6-8 per cent. You settle into a rhythm, hold tempo, and grind. West Country climbs are different. They are short, savage ramps of 200-500 metres at 15-25 per cent, dozens of them per day, separated by fast descents on narrow lanes. You never settle. Every climb demands a burst of effort well above threshold, a brief recovery on the descent, and then another burst. The muscular demand is closer to hill repeats than sustained climbing. Your legs need to produce repeated high-force efforts at low cadence, not hold steady-state power for 45 minutes.
The lanes are narrow, hedge-lined, and technical. West Country roads are not wide Alpine hairpins with run-off and barriers. They are single-track lanes with high hedgerows that block your sight line, blind corners, farm vehicles coming the other way, loose gravel from tractors, and cattle grids. Descending at speed on tired legs through lanes you cannot see around demands genuine bike-handling skill. Training on open dual carriageways does not prepare you for this. If you have access to narrow country lanes in your local area, ride them. If not, practise tight cornering at moderate speed on any quiet back road — the ability to hold a clean line through a blind corner at 40km/h matters more here than on most sportives.
Early May weather in southwest England is a coin flip. The event typically runs in the first week of May. Southwest England in early May can deliver 18°C and sunshine, 6°C and driving rain, or both in the same afternoon. Coastal sections add wind — exposed ridgeline roads above the Bristol Channel or along the north Devon coast are proper crosswind territory. The temperature range across three days can swing 15 degrees. You must pack for cold, wet, and windy on every stage, regardless of the forecast. The Three Stages: Know What You Are Facing
Stage 1: Somerset — Cheddar Gorge and the Mendips
The opening stage runs approximately 100-110km with around 1,700-1,900m of climbing through the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels. The signature climb is Cheddar Gorge — 1.9km at 5.5 per cent average with pitches touching 16 per cent on the steepest switchback. It is not the hardest climb of the weekend, but it is the most famous, and the temptation to ride it hard is real. Resist it. This is day one of three.
The Mendip climbs surrounding Cheddar are shorter and steeper — classic Somerset walls of 300-500m at 12-18 per cent. They arrive frequently. You will climb 15-20 times across the stage. The descents between them are fast and technical on narrow lanes. The terrain rolls constantly with almost no flat sections.
Tactical note: Treat stage one as a controlled ride. Your target is to finish feeling like you could have ridden harder. If you finish stage one on the limit, stage three becomes a survival exercise. Ride 5-10 per cent below what feels sustainable. You are banking energy, not spending it.
Stage 2: Devon — Porlock Hill and Exmoor
Stage two is typically the hardest day. Approximately 110-120km with 1,800-2,000m of climbing across Exmoor and the north Devon coast. Porlock Hill is the centrepiece — one of the steepest classified roads in the UK, with gradients touching 25 per cent on the toll road and sustained 15 per cent sections on the main road. The Exmoor climbs are relentless. Short, steep Devon walls appear every few kilometres. The coastal sections add exposed ridgeline roads where crosswind becomes a real factor. The road surface is variable — some lanes are well-maintained, others are rough and patched.
Tactical note: Porlock Hill is where the event is won and lost in the mind. Twenty-five per cent gradient on the second day of a three-day event is a psychological test as much as a physical one. Stay seated, hold the lowest gear you have, and keep turning the pedals. Walking Porlock is not a failure — many riders do. But the riders who clean it do so by starting slowly and staying in the saddle.
Stage 3: Dorset — Cranborne Chase and the Jurassic Coast
The final stage covers approximately 100-110km with 1,600-1,800m of climbing through Dorset. The gradients are marginally less severe than Devon — more 10-15 per cent than 20-25 per cent — but they land on legs with two days of steep climbing already in them. The cumulative fatigue turns a moderately hilly route into something that feels harder than either of the first two stages.
Cranborne Chase rolls through exposed chalk downland with little shelter from wind. The lanes are narrow and winding. The Jurassic Coast sections — if the route includes the steep climbs around Golden Cap or the Purbeck Hills — add sharp, short ascents on tired legs.
Tactical note: Day three is about managing what you have left. Start conservatively, fuel aggressively, and let the first hour pass without chasing anyone. The riders who finish well on day three are the ones who treated stage one as a warm-up and stage two as a controlled effort. The Tour of Wessex does not demand a high FTP in the way that a flat time trial does. It demands repeatable climbing power at low cadence — the ability to ride at 90-100 per cent of threshold for 2-5 minutes on a steep ramp, recover briefly on the descent, and do it again. And then do the same thing the next morning.
The 16-Week Training Structure
Phase 1: Base (Weeks 1-6) — Building Volume and Consecutive-Day Capacity
The base phase builds aerobic fitness and introduces the consecutive-day pattern that defines this event. Four to five rides per week. Total volume of 7-9 hours rising to 9-11 hours by week six.
Weekday rides: Three rides of 60-90 minutes at Zone 2 — steady conversational pace. One can include a 20-minute tempo effort at 85-90 per cent of FTP on the flattest road you can find. The base phase is about building the engine, not testing it.
Weekend back-to-backs: This is the critical session from week one. Saturday 2.5-3.5 hours, Sunday 2-3 hours. Neither ride needs to be heroic. The point is to ride on Sunday with Saturday in your legs and to start adapting to the overnight recovery pattern. By week six, the Saturday ride should include at least 800m of climbing and the Sunday ride at least 600m.
Off-bike work: Two sessions per week of single-leg strength — lunges, step-ups, single-leg press, and core stability (planks, side planks, bird dogs). The steep gradients demand leg strength at low cadence. Build it off the bike in the base phase so it is available on the bike in the build phase. Keep the load moderate — the goal is durability, not maximum strength.
Phase 2: Build (Weeks 7-12) — Steep Hill Repeats and Consecutive Long Rides
The build phase introduces climbing intensity and extends the back-to-back weekends. Total volume of 9-12 hours per week.
Key session 1: Steep hill repeats. Find the steepest hill you can access — ideally 10 per cent or more. Ride 6-8 repeats of 3-5 minutes at 95-105 per cent of FTP, seated, at 55-65rpm. Recover fully on the descent. This is the exact muscular demand of West Country walls: high force, low cadence, repeated until the legs are heavy. Check your training stress score to keep the load progressive without overreaching.
Key session 2: Threshold intervals. 3-4 x 10 minutes at 95-100 per cent of FTP with 5 minutes recovery. Standard threshold work that builds the aerobic ceiling. Do this on a road with some gradient if possible — flat threshold intervals are less specific to this event.
Weekend back-to-backs (extended): Saturday 3.5-4.5 hours with 1,000-1,500m of climbing. Sunday 3-4 hours with 800-1,200m of climbing. By week 12, the Saturday ride should feel like a genuine stage rehearsal — similar duration, similar climbing volume, similar effort. Sunday should feel hard but manageable. If Sunday feels impossible, the Saturday is too hard.
Weeks 11-12 peak block: One weekend in this phase should be a three-day block if logistics allow — Friday afternoon ride of 2 hours, Saturday 4 hours, Sunday 3 hours. This is the closest simulation you will get to the event itself. It does not need to match the event's climbing volume, but it needs to give you three consecutive days of riding to test your recovery protocol.
Phase 3: Sharpen (Weeks 13-14) — The Two-Day Test Block
The sharpening phase is short and specific. Total volume drops slightly to 8-10 hours per week.
The two-day test block (week 13 weekend): Saturday 4-4.5 hours with 1,500m+ of climbing at event pace. Sunday 3-3.5 hours with 1,000m+ of climbing at event pace. Treat this like a dress rehearsal — ride at the pace you plan to ride on event day, eat what you plan to eat, use the kit you plan to use, and practise your evening recovery protocol between the two days. Week 14: Reduce the weekend back-to-back to Saturday 3 hours, Sunday 2 hours. Keep one midweek threshold session. Begin the mental transition from training to racing.
Phase 4: Taper (Weeks 15-16) — Arriving Fresh
Week 15: Total volume 5-6 hours. Three short rides of 60-75 minutes with two brief efforts of 5 minutes at threshold in each — enough to keep the legs sharp without adding fatigue. One easy ride of 90 minutes with no intensity. No back-to-back weekend.
Week 16 (race week): Two rides of 45-60 minutes, Monday and Wednesday, with 3-4 short openers of 30 seconds at high intensity followed by full recovery. Thursday and Friday completely off the bike. Eat, sleep, and prepare kit. Arrive at the start line with the legs tingling, not tired.
Steep Climbing Technique
Seated vs Standing on UK Walls
Seated climbing is the default on gradients up to 18-20 per cent. Sitting keeps your rear wheel weighted, which matters on steep, loose West Country lanes where traction breaks easily. Slide back on the saddle, keep your hands on the tops or hoods, and drop your heels to engage the glutes. The cadence will be low — 50-60rpm on the steepest pitches — and the power will come from torque, not speed.
Standing is a tactical tool, not a default. On ramps above 20 per cent, standing may be necessary to generate the torque required to keep the pedals turning. But standing on a steep, narrow lane on day two of a three-day event is a high-cost effort. It burns matches fast. If you stand, keep it brief — 10-15 pedal strokes to get over the steepest pitch, then sit immediately. Riders who stand for entire 25 per cent climbs arrive at the top with nothing left for the next one, which is usually 3km away.
Momentum management matters more than power. The short, steep nature of West Country climbs means that carrying speed into the bottom of each ramp saves energy. Do not brake into the base of a climb. Read the road 50-100m ahead, anticipate the gradient change, and shift before you need to — not during the steep section when the chain is under maximum load. A smooth shift into your climbing gear 20m before the ramp begins is worth 10 watts of free speed.
Descending Narrow Lanes
West Country descents are narrow, hedge-lined, and often damp. Brake before corners, not in them. Keep your weight centred and low. Cover the brakes on every descent — surprises come fast on blind, single-track lanes. If you are running disc brakes, they will perform well in the wet. Rim brakes in sustained West Country rain are a genuine safety concern; consider upgrading if that is your setup.
Gearing
This is the single most common equipment mistake on the Tour of Wessex. Riders who bring a road-standard 11-28 cassette to an event with 25 per cent gradients are walking by stage two. Use the gear ratio calculator to check your ratios against the steepest gradients.
A 34x34 setup is the working minimum. A 34x36 or a sub-compact chainring paired with a wide-range cassette is better. Several climbs on the route — Porlock Hill in particular — have sustained sections above 20 per cent where a 34x28 requires power outputs that are simply not sustainable on day two of three. The maths is straightforward: at 25 per cent gradient, a 75kg rider on a 34x28 needs to produce roughly 400 watts at 55rpm to maintain forward motion. On day two. After 1,800m of climbing the previous day. Run low gears. Leave the ego at the start line.
Check derailleur capacity before fitting a larger cassette. A medium-cage rear derailleur handles a 34-tooth sprocket; a short cage may not. Test the new setup on steep climbs in training — gear changes under load at extreme ratios can be unreliable if the drivetrain is not properly configured.
Fuelling Across Three Days

On-bike fuelling is non-negotiable from kilometre one. Do not wait until you feel hungry. Set a timer for every 20 minutes and eat. Gels, bars, rice cakes, whatever sits well — the format matters less than the consistency. Eighty grams of carbohydrate per hour is the floor; ninety is better. Train this intake during your build-phase back-to-back weekends so your gut is adapted before race day.
Evening recovery nutrition is where stage races are won. Within 30 minutes of finishing each stage, take a carb-protein recovery shake — 40-50g of carbs and 30-40g of protein. Then eat a substantial meal within 2 hours — rice, pasta, potatoes, lean protein. The evening meal between stages is not optional. It is training nutrition, not a reward. Target 150-200g of carbohydrate in the evening meal alone. Eat until you are properly full, then eat a little more.
Breakfast on days two and three is your pre-stage fuel. Three hours before each stage start, eat 100-150g of carbs — porridge, toast, rice, whatever you tolerate. A coffee. Sip water. Arrive at the start line with full glycogen and a settled stomach.
Recovery Between Stages
Recovery between stages is the hidden skill of multi-day events. Two riders with identical fitness will have materially different day-three experiences based on what they do between finishing stage two and starting stage three.
Nutrition timing: Recovery shake within 30 minutes. Substantial meal within 2 hours. A high-carb snack before bed. This is not negotiable — it is the foundation of overnight glycogen replenishment.
Sleep: Eight hours minimum. If you are camping, bring earplugs, a quality sleeping mat, and a pillow from home. Sleep quality matters more than sleep quantity, but you need both. Avoid alcohol — a beer feels earned but it impairs glycogen resynthesis and degrades sleep quality measurably.
Legs up the wall: Twenty minutes with your legs elevated above your heart after each stage. Against a wall, on a chair, in a tent — the position does not need to be precise. This aids venous return and reduces lower-leg swelling. It is free and it works.
Compression: If you own compression tights or recovery boots, use them between stages. Wear compression tights to sleep. The evidence for compression in single-day recovery is modest; across multiple days of cumulative fatigue, the anecdotal reports from multi-day racers are uniformly positive.
Light spin: A 15-20 minute easy spin in the evening — truly easy, below Zone 1 — clears metabolic waste and loosens legs that will stiffen overnight. This is counterintuitive after a hard stage. It works.
Stretching and foam rolling: Ten minutes of light stretching — calves, hip flexors, quads, hamstrings, lower back. Foam roll the IT band and quads gently. Do not attack sore muscles aggressively; the goal is circulation and mobility, not deep-tissue work. Save that for the week after the event.
Weather and Kit
Early May in southwest England is wildly variable. Check the wind chill calculator for exposed ridgeline sections — a 12°C day with a 30km/h headwind on an Exmoor ridge feels like 4°C at speed.
Temperature range: 5-20°C is the realistic window across three days in early May. The southwest is milder than the Midlands but the coastal exposure adds wind chill, and Exmoor's elevation creates its own microclimate. Expect at least one cold, wet section across the three days.
Rain gear: A packable waterproof jacket in the jersey on every stage. Not a wind shell — a genuine waterproof with sealed seams. West Country rain is persistent, not a passing shower. Two hours of drizzle on day two is not unusual.
Layering: Arm warmers, a gilet, and full-finger gloves on every stage. In marginal conditions, knee warmers as well. An extra base layer in a jersey pocket if the forecast is truly cold. Overshoes if rain is likely.
Sun protection: If the weather turns warm, exposed ridgeline roads in direct May sunshine burn fast. Sun cream on the back of the neck, arms, and legs. A cap under the helmet.
Spare kit between stages: A complete dry kit for each stage is the ideal. If weight and luggage space are limited, at least a dry base layer and dry socks for each morning. Starting a stage in yesterday's damp kit is a morale killer that becomes a hypothermia risk if the weather turns.
Race Day Pacing
Day one is a bank deposit. Ride at 70-75 per cent of what feels sustainable. Yes, that feels too easy. It is supposed to. You will pass riders on the Mendip climbs who are pushing hard, looking strong, and feeling good about themselves. Let them go. You will see them again on day three — either walking or in the car park having pulled out. The riders who finish all three stages well are the ones who treat day one as a controlled warm-up. Use the power-speed calculator to set your target: if your FTP is 250 watts, ride the climbs at 200-215 watts and the flatter sections at 180-190 watts. Bank everything above that.
Day two is honest work. You will feel yesterday in your legs from the first pedal stroke. This is normal. The stiffness fades within the first 30 minutes if you warm up properly. Ride at 75-80 per cent of sustainable effort. On Porlock Hill, ride your own pace — do not follow wheels up a 25 per cent gradient on the second day. Sit, stay in your lowest gear, and let the gradient set the speed. Eat aggressively through day two; your appetite may dip as fatigue builds, so set a timer and force-fuel. Check your VAM on the major climbs to ensure you are not overcooking the effort.
Day three is about finishing with dignity. Start slow. Genuinely slow — the first 30 minutes should feel like a recovery ride. Your legs will come around or they will not, and the first few kilometres will tell you which. If they come around, ride steady and enjoy the Dorset countryside. If they do not, drop into survival mode immediately: lowest sustainable effort, maximum fuelling, no surges. The riders who finish day three well are rarely the fittest — they are the ones who paced days one and two correctly and recovered properly between stages.

Should I ride the same bike I train on? Yes. Do not bring a new bike, new saddle, new shoes, or new anything to a three-day event. Every contact point between you and the bike — saddle, handlebars, pedals, shoes — must be tested across at least two consecutive-day training blocks before the event. A saddle that is comfortable for 4 hours becomes a serious problem at hour 10 of cumulative riding. A new handlebar tape wrap that feels fine on day one can cause hand numbness by day three. Test everything. Change nothing in the final four weeks.
How do I handle mechanicals during the event? Carry a full repair kit on every stage: two inner tubes or plug kits if tubeless, a CO2 inflator plus a mini pump as backup, a multi-tool, a chain quick link, and tyre levers. West Country lanes are rough in places and punctures are common. A spare derailleur hanger is worth the 20 grams if your bike uses a replaceable one. Know how to fix a puncture quickly — practise at home until you can do it in under five minutes. Is the Tour of Wessex harder than the Fred Whitton or Dragon Ride? It is a different kind of hard. The Fred Whitton packs its difficulty into a single brutal day with iconic climbs.
