What the Haute Route Dolomites Actually Demands

Five stages across five to seven days. Roughly 600km with 14,000m of climbing. That is the brochure. Here is what it actually means when you are standing at the start line in Bolzano or Bressanone with four days of racing ahead of you and vertical rock towers in every direction.

Each stage averages 120-140km and 2,800-3,200m of climbing. Some stages are shorter — 90km — but steeper, with 3,000m packed into less distance. Others run 150km with rolling sections between the major passes. Three or four of the five stages cross 2,200m altitude. At least one touches 2,758m if the Stelvio features. The highest points are not gentle high-altitude ridgelines like the French Alps. They are narrow passes cut through vertical Dolomite limestone, switchbacks stacked above each other, and descents that drop 1,200m in 15 minutes.

Each stage is timed. Mass start, neutralised roll-out, then the gun goes. Riders compete for daily stage results and a cumulative general classification. The faster end of the field rides tactically — drafting, covering moves, attacking on the climbs. The mid-pack rides on power and pacing. The back fights against cut-offs. This is a stage race, not a guided tour.

Here is the thing nobody tells you about the Dolomites versus the Alps. The total climbing is lower. The Alps edition stacks 21,000m across seven stages. The Dolomites does 14,000m across five. On paper, each Dolomite stage averages less vertical per day. In practice, the gradient intensity is higher. A Dolomite stage with 2,800m of climbing concentrated into four passes at 8-12% average is harder on the legs than an Alpine stage with 3,000m of climbing spread across two long cols at 6%. The steepness changes the muscular demand. It changes the gearing maths. It changes how much power you lose to gradient inefficiency. And it changes recovery — steep-gradient climbing creates more eccentric muscle damage than steady-grade climbing at the same total elevation.

Weather in the Dolomites is its own animal. Summer mornings start cold — 6-10C at altitude. By midday the valley floors hit 30C. By 14:00 there is a 40-50% chance of thunderstorms above 2,000m. You can leave the hotel in arm warmers, climb in 28C sunshine, summit in a thunderstorm at 8C, and descend through hail. This happens regularly. Kit choices are life-or-death decisions above 2,500m in a way that they are not in a valley-floor French Alpine stage.

The defining physical demand is the same as every multi-day stage race: can you ride hard today and ride hard again tomorrow? But the Dolomites adds a secondary demand that the Alps does not test as aggressively — can you produce power on steep gradients under cumulative fatigue? Day 1 at 9.3% feels different from day 4 at 9.3% on muscles that have already done 8,000m of climbing.

Course Analysis: The Dolomite Passes

The route changes year to year, but these passes appear in nearly every edition. Knowing their profiles is knowing the event.

Passo Giau — The Signature Test

10km at 9.3% average. The gradient rarely drops below 8% and the final 3km sit at 10-12%. This is the single hardest sustained effort most riders will face in any edition of the event. The road is narrow, the surface occasionally rough, and the altitude at the summit — 2,236m — means you are climbing in thinner air for the entire ascent. On the Maratona dles Dolomites, the Giau is the crux of a single day. On the Haute Route, it is the crux of a stage that comes after two or three previous days of racing. Passo Fedaia — The Gradient Shock

The approach to Fedaia from Canazei features ramps that touch 18%. Not for long — 200-400m stretches — but when those ramps land on day 4 of a stage race, the muscular demand is extreme. Average gradient across the full climb is around 7.5%, but the profile is not steady. It rises, eases, then walls up. This kind of variable gradient is harder to pace than a consistent climb because you cannot lock into a rhythm. You accelerate, ease, accelerate, ease. Each acceleration costs matches.

The Sella Ronda Passes — Sella, Gardena, Pordoi

These three passes form the Sella Ronda circuit — a loop around the Sella massif that most Dolomite stages use in some configuration. Passo Sella is 5.5km at 7.9%. Passo Gardena is 5.8km at 6.1%. Passo Pordoi is 9.4km at 6.8%. Individually, none of them is a monster. Tre Cime di Lavaredo Approach

When the route goes near Tre Cime, the approach climb from Misurina is 7km at 7.6% average with the final 2km at 12-14%. The altitude at the top is 2,320m. The climb itself is not the longest of the event, but it is exposed — no tree cover, afternoon sun or wind with no shelter — and the scenery is so stunning that riders look up at the three rock towers instead of at their power meter. How Dolomite Climbs Differ From Alpine Climbs

Let me break this down. A typical Alps HC climb — Galibier, Bonette, Iseran — runs 20-30km at 5-7% average. You find a rhythm at 250 watts, you sit in it for 70-90 minutes, you manage hydration and fuelling across the effort. The demand is aerobic. The muscular load is moderate because the gradient allows reasonable cadence.

A typical Dolomite pass runs 8-15km at 8-12% average. You cannot hold a steady rhythm because the gradient changes every kilometre. You ride 85rpm at 280W for three minutes, then the road kicks to 12% and you are at 65rpm and 310W for two minutes, then it eases to 7% and you try to recover at 240W for a minute before it kicks again. The demand is still aerobic, but the muscular load is significantly higher. You recruit more muscle fibres at lower cadences. You create more eccentric damage on the steeper pitches. And your power output oscillates more, which means your heart rate sits higher relative to the same average wattage on a steady climb.

The descents are different too. Alpine descents are long, sweeping, and fast — 40-50 minutes of moderate braking and big turns. Dolomite descents are shorter, steeper, and more technical — tight switchbacks on narrow roads with occasional gravel on the apex. Descending well in the Dolomites saves time and energy. Descending badly costs both and adds crash risk under fatigue.

16-Week Training Framework

This build is structured around four blocks. Back-to-back stacked-day capacity layers in from week 5 and peaks in weeks 9-12. Volumes assume you are starting at 10-12 hours/week with regular climbing already in the legs. Adjust for your own base.

Weeks 1-4: Base With Climbing Density

Volume: 10-12 hours/week. Four to five rides, 80% in Zone 2.

The base block for a Dolomites build is different from a standard sportive base in one respect: climbing density. Every long ride needs climbing. Not one big col — multiple shorter climbs with descents between them, replicating the Sella Ronda shape. Build from 3.5 hours to 5 hours over the block with 1,000-1,500m of climbing per long ride.

One mid-week session: 3x10 minutes at 85-90% FTP on the steepest gradient you can find locally. This is not threshold work. It is muscular adaptation to gradient. Keep cadence at 65-75rpm — lower than you would ride on the flat. The Dolomites will force this cadence on you; better to choose it now.

Weeks 5-8: Build With Threshold Climbing and Back-to-Back Introduction

Volume: 12-14 hours/week. Two quality sessions appear. The back-to-back weekends start.

Threshold climbing. 4x10 minutes at 95-100% FTP on gradient, building to 3x15 minutes by week 8. Do these on a real climb, not a flat road or a turbo. The recruitment patterns are different on gradient — the glute and hamstring engagement at 8-10% is measurably different from flat-road threshold.

Gradient-specific work. One session per week: 6x5 minutes at 8-12% gradient, 100-105% FTP, cadence 60-70rpm. Two minutes recovery between each. This session targets the Fedaia-style ramps — short, steep, repeated. It builds the muscular endurance that prevents blow-up on day 4 when a 15% gradient section appears unexpectedly.

Back-to-back weekends. From week 6, Saturday is 4-5 hours with 1,500m climbing. Sunday is 3-4 hours with 1,000m climbing. You arrive at Sunday feeling yesterday. That is the point. Train the overnight recovery that the event demands. If Sunday feels fine, Saturday was not hard enough.

Weeks 9-12: Peak Volume and Back-to-Back Racing Simulation

Volume: 14-16 hours/week. This is the block that separates Haute Route preparation from single-day sportive training.

By week 10, your weekend looks like this: Saturday 5-6 hours with 2,000-2,500m of climbing including two sustained climbs of 30+ minutes. Sunday 4-5 hours with 1,500-2,000m of climbing at sportive pace. Repeat this structure three times across the block with a rest week between. If you are a flat-land rider, travel for these weekends. Climbing-specific fitness cannot be faked on a turbo trainer with gradient simulation — the eccentric loading and the body-position demands are different.

Mid-week quality tightens. One threshold session of 3x12 minutes at 95-100% FTP. One steep-gradient session of 5x6 minutes at 10%+ gradient, 100-105% FTP, low cadence. Total intensity drops slightly — the back-to-back weekends are doing the heavy lifting now, and stacking high-intensity mid-week on top of 10-hour weekends is the road to overtraining, not the road to the Stelvio.

Weeks 13-14: Race-Specific Simulation

Volume: 13-14 hours/week. One final back-to-back weekend, ideally in real mountain terrain.

Saturday: 5 hours, 2,500m climbing, three passes at sub-threshold. Pace each climb at 80% FTP — the intensity you will hold on days 2-4 of the actual race. Sunday: 4 hours, 1,800m climbing, pacing at 75-80% FTP. This weekend is the dress rehearsal. Eat, hydrate, and recover between rides exactly as you plan to during the event. Test the recovery shake, the compression routine, the sleep protocol. Race week is not the time to trial new systems.

Weeks 15-16: Taper

Volume drops 30-40% in week 15, another 50% in week 16. Keep short intensity alive — 3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2 max. These sharpen the legs without adding fatigue. The taper is where most amateurs panic. They feel fresh by day 3 and decide they are losing fitness. You are not. You are shedding accumulated fatigue that blocks peak performance. Trust it.

Travel to the Dolomites 5-7 days before stage 1 if possible. Ride easy at altitude. Let the body begin adapting to the thinner air. The fitness is already built. The taper is about arriving with usable legs, not building new ones.

Key Sessions That Simulate the Event's Demands

Four sessions carry the most transfer to the Haute Route Dolomites. Everything else supports these.

Steep hill repeats. 5x8 minutes at 8-12% gradient, 95-105% FTP, cadence 60-70rpm. Three minutes recovery between efforts. This is the Dolomite-specific session. The Maratona dles Dolomites uses a similar protocol for the Giau. Here, you are building the same muscular endurance across multiple days instead of a single day. Run this session once per week through the build and peak blocks.

Back-to-back climbing weekends. Saturday 5-6 hours, 2,000-2,500m climbing. Sunday 4-5 hours, 1,500-2,000m climbing. Both at sportive pace. This is the most important training stimulus in the entire plan. Nothing else replicates the demand of recovering overnight and climbing hard the next morning. Three of these weekends in the peak block is the minimum.

Cadence switching on gradient. Within a single 20-minute climb, alternate every 3 minutes between 85-90rpm and 55-65rpm at the same power output. The Dolomites change gradient constantly. Your cadence has to adjust without your power dropping. This session teaches the neuromuscular skill of switching between high-cadence spinning and low-cadence grinding without losing watts.

Recovery ride quality. The day after a long climbing day, ride 90 minutes at Z1-Z2. Truly easy — below 65% FTP, heart rate below 130bpm for most riders. This is not a junk-mile day. It is active recovery that flushes metabolic waste and promotes blood flow without adding training stress. The quality of your recovery rides in training determines the quality of your recovery between stages. If you cannot ride properly easy the day after riding hard, you have a pacing problem, not a fitness problem.

Nutrition and Fuelling Strategy

Multi-day nutrition is where the Haute Route is won and lost. Single-day fuelling is simple enough: load glycogen, eat 80g/hour, recover when you finish. Multi-day fuelling is a compounding problem. The deficit from underfuelling on day 1 shows up as a crack on day 3. The deficit from underfuelling on days 1 through 3 shows up as a DNF on day 5.

On the bike. 80-100g carbohydrate per hour, every stage, every day. Two gels plus a bar each hour, or a 90g/hour drink mix paired with solid food every 90 minutes. The 2:1 glucose-fructose ratio that Asker Jeukendrup's research established is the standard — dual transportable carbohydrates allow higher absorption rates than glucose alone. Train your gut to this volume on at least six long rides before the event. The first time you eat 90g/hour should not be on stage 1 of a five-day race.

Daily totals during race week. 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg body weight per day. A 72kg rider eats 576-720g of carbs daily. That is far more than normal training intake. Protein climbs to 1.5-2g/kg/day for overnight muscle repair. This is more food than feels right. Eat it anyway. Recovery window. Within 30 minutes of crossing every finish line — every stage, from day 1 — take a carb-protein recovery shake at a 3:1 ratio. Within 90 minutes, eat a full meal. This protocol is non-negotiable from the first stage. Not from the day you feel tired. Not from the day your legs start to go. From stage 1. Recovery debt compounds. Miss the window on day 1 and you pay it back on day 3 with interest.

Altitude effects on appetite and hydration. Above 2,000m, appetite decreases. Dehydration accelerates because the air is drier and breathing rate increases. Riders consistently undereat and underdrink at altitude compared to sea-level efforts at the same intensity. Force fluids — 750ml-1L per hour on stages with extended time above 2,000m. Set a timer on your head unit if you need to. The thirst signal lags behind the deficit at altitude.

GI tolerance. Eating 8-10g/kg carbs daily for five consecutive days is a gut-training problem. Many riders experience bloating, nausea, or GI distress by day 3 because their intestinal absorption capacity has never been trained at that volume. Practise race-week carb loading in training — three consecutive days of 8g/kg intake during a back-to-back training weekend. If your stomach rebels, you know before the event.

Kit and Equipment Considerations

Gearing. Sub-compact is not optional. A 32-34 tooth inner chainring paired with a 32-34 tooth cassette is the minimum for Dolomite gradients under multi-day fatigue. What feels fine on fresh legs at 8% gradient feels very different on day-4 legs at 12% gradient. Test your gearing on the steepest local climb you have at the end of a 5-hour ride — if you are below 55rpm in your easiest gear, change the cassette before you book the flight.

Descending equipment. Full-finger gloves for every descent above 2,000m. Dolomite summit temperatures can sit at 4-8C even in August, and a 15-minute technical descent on tired hands with numb fingers is a crash risk, not a discomfort issue. A thin skull cap under the helmet for early-morning starts and high-altitude finishes.

Altitude-specific kit. A warmer base layer than you would pack for a sea-level event. A quality rain jacket — not a gilet, a full jacket — carried on every stage regardless of the morning forecast. Dolomite afternoon thunderstorms arrive fast and hard. Rain at 2,200m with a 12km descent ahead of you is a hypothermia risk if you are wearing only a jersey. Arm warmers and knee warmers in a back pocket as standard. The wind chill on a 2,500m descent pushes feels-like temperature well below freezing even in summer.

Recovery tools. Compression sleeves or socks for the evenings. Foam roller — most Dolomite hotels do not have one. Recovery shake powder you trust (do not rely on hotel buffets for precise macros during a stage race). Electrolyte tabs. An eye mask if you are a light sleeper — Italian mountain hotels in August are lively until 23:00. Legs-up-the-wall for 15 minutes after every stage before the shower. Simple. Free. Effective.

Race Week and Race Day Logistics

Travel and acclimatisation. Arrive 5-7 days before stage 1. The altitude exposure is worth 5-10 minutes per high-altitude stage compared to arriving the night before. Ride easy at altitude for the first three days — Z1, nothing higher. Let the body produce red blood cells without adding training fatigue. If 5-7 days is not possible, 3 days is still better than zero.

Daily recovery protocol between stages. Finish. Recovery shake within 30 minutes. Legs up the wall for 15 minutes. Shower. Full meal within 90 minutes. Compression sleeves on. Foam roll calves, quads, hip flexors — 10 minutes total, nothing aggressive. Massage if available (book ahead, every day, from day 1 — the evening queue fills up by 16:00). Lights out by 21:30. Sleep 8 hours minimum. This is the protocol. It is not interesting. It works. The riders who skip it for the bar or the late dinner are the riders losing 15 minutes a stage by day 4.

Stage-by-stage pacing. Race the GC, not the stage. Stages 1 and 2: pace at 75-80% FTP on the climbs. Leave ego at the start line. Riders flying past you on stage 1 are not your competition — your competition is the version of yourself on stage 5. Stage 3: 80% FTP ceiling. By now you know how your body is recovering overnight. Stage 4 and 5: you can open it up if the legs are there. The riders who negative-split a Haute Route — riding the final stages harder than the first — are the riders who move up the GC. The riders who positive-split it are the ones watching their GC ranking drop 30 places over the final two days.

Altitude pacing adjustment. Above 2,200m, reduce your power ceiling by 8-10% compared to your sea-level targets. If your pacing target is 260W on the climbs, ride 235-240W above 2,200m. Common Mistakes Riders Make at Haute Route Dolomites

Training for one hard day instead of five back-to-back days. The most common preparation error. A rider who can do one brilliant 140km Dolomite day is not prepared for five 120km Dolomite days. The training problem is not "ride hard." It is "ride hard the day after riding hard the day after riding hard." Back-to-back weekends are the only training that simulates this. A single 8-hour ride does not replicate the demand of three 5-hour days.

Ignoring altitude effects on power. Sea-level riders lose 8-15% of sustainable power above 2,200m. That is 20-40 watts for a rider with a 280W FTP. On a 40-minute climb, 30 watts of power loss translates to 5-7 minutes slower. Riders who pace to their sea-level numbers above 2,200m blow up. The power meter does not lie, but the altitude makes the same wattage harder. Pace to heart rate and RPE above 2,000m, not to absolute power.

Racing day 1 and paying on day 4. Fresh legs and adrenaline are a trap. The rider who attacks stage 1 at 90% FTP on the climbs is the rider calling for the broom wagon on stage 4. Stage 1 should feel easy. Uncomfortably easy. You should finish feeling like you left 20 minutes on the table. That 20 minutes is banked for day 4.

Underfuelling. This is the big one. Eating 8-10g/kg carbs daily for five consecutive days is really difficult. The volume of food is abnormal. Many riders eat 5-6g/kg out of habit or because the stomach resists. By day 3 the glycogen deficit is real and no amount of on-bike fuelling can compensate for a 2,000-calorie daily shortfall accumulated across three days. Force-feed if you need to. Set alarms. Eat to a schedule, not to hunger.

Skipping recovery protocols between stages. The recovery shake, the compression, the legs-up-the-wall, the early night — these are not optional extras from the day things feel hard. They are mandatory from stage 1. Recovery debt compounds silently. You feel fine on day 2 because the body has reserves. By day 4 those reserves are empty and the debt lands all at once. The riders who slept 7 hours and skipped the shake on days 1 and 2 are the riders cracking on the Fedaia ramps on day 4.

Wrong gearing for multi-day steep climbing. An 11-28 cassette that works fine on a single-day sportive becomes a torture device on day 4 of a stage race when your FTP has dropped 5-8% from accumulated fatigue. The same 10% gradient that you rode at 70rpm on fresh legs becomes 52rpm on tired legs with the same gearing. Bring a 32 or 34 on the back. The weight penalty is 30 grams. The racing benefit is finishing.

What is the hardest stage of the Haute Route Dolomites?
It varies by year, but stages featuring Passo Giau (9.3% average over 10km), Passo Fedaia (18% ramps), or the Tre Cime di Lavaredo approach are consistently the hardest. The steepest stage is not always the longest — the gradient intensity on a 90km Dolomite stage can exceed a 140km Alpine stage in total difficulty.
