  • L'Ariegeoise is the event I point people towards when they want a proper Pyrenean challenge without the circus of the bigger sportives. The roads are quieter, the climbs are wild, and the town of Ax-les-Thermes is exactly the kind of place you want to spend a weekend around a bike ride.
  • The Port de Pailheres at 2,001m arriving in the second half of the day is what makes this event honest. You cannot bluff your way over an HC climb on tired legs. If the preparation is right, it is one of the great days on a bike. If it is not, you will know it long before the summit.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about L'Ariégeoise. The climbing numbers — 170km, 4,600m — sit right alongside La Marmotte and the Otztaler in the upper tier of European cyclosportives. But the character of the climbing is fundamentally different. Alpine cols settle into a rhythm. You find your gear, you find your watts, you ride. Pyrenean cols refuse to let you settle. The gradient pitches up to 10, 11, 12 per cent, then drops back to 5 before kicking again. Your body never finds a constant state. And the Port de Pailhères, which tops out at 2,001 metres and arrives in the second half of the route when your legs already carry 3,000m of vertical, is one of the most honest mountain passes you will ever ride. It does not care what your FTP says. It cares whether you can climb steep, irregular terrain for over an hour on tired legs while the weather decides what it wants to do.

L'Ariégeoise starts and finishes in Ax-les-Thermes, a thermal spa town deep in the French Pyrenees. Three to four thousand riders line up each year across three routes — approximately 75km with 1,500m of climbing, 110km with 3,000m, and the grand parcours at 170km with 4,600m. Entry costs EUR50-80. The event typically falls in late June or early July — hot in the valleys, cold on the summits, and liable to throw a thunderstorm at you between two and four in the afternoon.

The good news: it is fixable. Every rider I have worked with who arrived with the right preparation — specifically the right kind of climbing preparation — came home having ridden one of the finest sportives in Europe. The ones who arrived with Alpine assumptions had a harder day than they needed to. This guide is built around the difference.

Course Profile and Key Sections

The Start and Early Valleys

Ax-les-Thermes sits at around 720m altitude in the Ariège valley. The early kilometres move through rolling terrain, some false flats, and a few short ramps that serve as a warm-up for what is coming. This is where you calibrate your pacing for the day. If your heart rate is above Zone 2 in the valleys, you are already spending matches that the Port de Pailhères will demand later. Keep the effort conversational. Eat. Drink. Find your rhythm from kilometre one.

The Mid-Route Cols

Before the Pailhères, the grand parcours takes you over several significant Pyrenean cols, including the Col de Chioula at approximately 1,400m. These are proper climbs with gradients that pitch and ease in the way only Pyrenean roads do. The road surfaces are narrower and rougher than anything in the Maurienne or Oisans — broken tarmac, patched surfaces, gravel at the edges. None of it is dangerous if you are paying attention, but it rewards wider tyres and a conservative descending style.

The Col de Chioula rewards patience. The gradient is not brutal on paper, but the surface and irregular pitch make it harder than it looks. Ride it at 78-83 per cent FTP. Eat at the summit. The Pailhères is next, and everything before it is preparation.

The Port de Pailhères — The Crux

Let me be really clear about this: the Port de Pailhères is the reason L'Ariégeoise is not just another long sportive. It is the reason the event sits in the same conversation as the Marmotte and the Otztaler. And it is where the event is won or lost — not on time, but on experience.

The climb is approximately 15km from the Ariège side at an average of around 8 per cent, topping out at 2,001m. Those numbers are bad enough. But the real difficulty is the character. The Pailhères does not settle. It kicks up to 10-12 per cent for 500 metres, drops back to 5-6 per cent for a stretch, then ramps again. Your body never finds a steady state. Your gear selection changes every few minutes. The riders who treat it like an Alpine climb — find a gear, hold a wattage, ride — discover that the Pailhères does not work that way.

And it arrives in the second half of the route, when your legs already carry over 3,000m of vertical. Your glycogen is depleted. Your cadence is lower than it was three hours ago. At 2,001m, most amateurs lose 3-6 per cent of their sea-level power. This is where under-fuelled riders stop. This is where under-geared riders grind to a halt at 45 RPM on a 12 per cent pitch. And this is where riders who prepared specifically for irregular Pyrenean climbing ride through with control.

The Closing Section Back to Ax-les-Thermes

After the Pailhères summit, the descent back towards Ax-les-Thermes is your reward and your final test. The road is narrow and technical in places. If rain has come through — and afternoon Pyrenean rain is common — the surface will be wet. Descend conservatively. You have already done the hard work. Getting back to Ax-les-Thermes in one piece, with a story to tell, is the only remaining objective.

16-Week Training Plan Overview

This plan targets the grand parcours. If you are riding the 110km route, the structure is the same but the peak volume is lower — 10-12 hours per week rather than 12-15.

Phase 1: Aerobic Foundation (Weeks 1-5)

Volume: 8-10 hours per week. Four to five rides. Eighty per cent in Zone 2.

The goal is aerobic capacity and saddle time. You are building the engine that will sustain 7-10 hours of mountain riding. Keep the easy riding properly easy — if you cannot hold a conversation, it is not Zone 2.

Weekly structure:

  • 3-4 Zone 2 rides (1-2 hours midweek, longer on weekends)
  • 1 quality session: tempo intervals, 2x20 minutes at 88-93 per cent FTP
  • 1 long ride building from 3 hours to 4.5 hours with 600-1,000m climbing
  • 2 core sessions: planks (3x45 seconds), side planks (3x30 seconds per side), dead bugs (3x10 per side), single-leg glute bridges (3x12 per side)

Key metric: By week 5, a 4.5-hour ride with 1,000m of climbing should feel like training, not a special event.

Phase 2: Climbing Volume (Weeks 6-10)

Volume: 10-14 hours per week. The climbing-specific work begins.

Weekly structure:

  • 2 quality sessions (see Key Sessions below)
  • 2-3 Zone 2 rides
  • 1 long ride building to 5-6 hours with 1,500-2,500m climbing
  • 1 core session (maintain, do not increase)

At least two weekends in this phase should include back-to-back riding days with significant climbing. A 5-hour Saturday with 1,500m followed by a 3-hour Sunday with 800m teaches your body to recover overnight and ride on tired legs — which is exactly what the Pailhères demands.

Gut training progression: Begin practising your race-day nutrition protocol from week 6. Start at 40-50g of carbohydrate per hour and build to 60-80g by week 10. Your gut needs the same progressive overload as your legs. At least four long rides in this phase should include the full fuelling protocol.

Phase 3: Event Simulation (Weeks 11-14)

Volume: 12-15 hours per week. The peak block.

Weekly structure:

  • 2 quality sessions (longer, more specific)
  • 2 Zone 2 rides
  • 1 long ride: 6-7 hours with 2,500m+ climbing, including a sustained 45-60 minute climb in the final third
  • 1 core session

At least one ride in this phase should simulate the Pailhères demand: ride 4 hours with significant climbing, then immediately tackle a 45-60 minute sustained climb. Flat-terrain riders can replicate this on the turbo — 4 hours steady, then 50 minutes at 80-85 per cent FTP with gradient simulation.

Phase 4: Taper (Weeks 15-16)

Week 15: Volume drops 30-40 per cent. One quality session at reduced duration. Long ride capped at 3 hours.

Week 16: Volume drops 50 per cent. Short, sharp efforts — 3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max — to keep the legs responsive without adding fatigue. The taper does not build fitness. It sheds fatigue. Trust it.

Key Sessions

These are the sessions that build the specific fitness L'Ariégeoise demands. You can go and do them this week.

Session 1: Sustained Climbing Intervals

2x25 minutes at 80-85 per cent FTP on a real gradient (5-8 per cent), 8 minutes recovery between efforts. If you do not have a sustained climb available, use gradient simulation indoors or ride the same hill twice. The target is 50 minutes of total work at an intensity you could hold for 70 minutes flat-out. This builds the capacity to sit on the Pailhères for 60-75 minutes without cracking.

Progress to 2x30 minutes by week 12.

Session 2: Variable-Gradient Simulation

On a climb or on the turbo: alternate 3 minutes at 90-95 per cent FTP (simulating 10-12 per cent pitches) with 3 minutes at 75-80 per cent FTP (simulating 5-6 per cent sections). Repeat 6-8 times. This teaches your body to handle the constant effort changes the Pailhères demands. Riders who can hold 250 watts for 30 minutes often struggle when the same climb asks for 280, then 220, then 290 in rapid succession. This session fixes that.

Session 3: The Long Mountain Day

5-6 hours with 2,000m+ of climbing, including a climb of 30-45 minutes in the final 90 minutes of the ride. Fuel at race pace throughout — 60-80g of carbohydrate per hour. This is the session that tells you whether your pacing, fuelling, and gearing are ready. If you finish the final climb grinding at 50 RPM and feeling sick, something in the plan needs adjusting. If you finish it controlled and steady, you are ready for the Pailhères.

Session 4: Low-Cadence Torque Intervals

4x8 minutes at 55-65 RPM on a moderate gradient, at 85-90 per cent FTP. These recruit type 2 muscle fibres at aerobic intensities and prepare the neuromuscular system for the steep pitches where the Pailhères kicks above 10 per cent and your cadence drops whether you want it to or not.

Nutrition Strategy

A 170km day with 4,600m of climbing burns 4,500-6,500 kcal depending on body weight and finishing time. You cannot carry enough food to close that gap entirely, but you can close it enough that glycogen stores and fat oxidation cover the rest.

Target: 60-80g of carbohydrate per hour from kilometre one. Not from when you feel hungry. Not from the first col. From the start. Use the Fuel Planner to plan exact quantities against your expected ride time.

Pre-race: 8-10g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight the day before. Breakfast 3-4 hours before the start — 2-3g/kg of carbs, moderate protein, low fibre, low fat.

The Pailhères fuelling problem. Eat your last solid food before the base of the Pailhères. Once the gradient kicks and the effort intensifies, eating becomes harder and absorption drops. A gel 30 minutes into the climb is manageable. A rice cake at 10 per cent gradient is not. Arrive at the Pailhères with a full bottle and two gels accessible.

Gut training is not optional. At least four long training rides in the build phase should include the full 60-80g/hour protocol. If your gut rebels at 60g per hour in training, you have weeks to fix it. If it rebels on the Pailhères, your day is over.

Equipment and Gear

Gearing

A compact crankset (50/34) with an 11-32 cassette is the minimum. An 11-34 is better. A 34x32 gives a 75kg rider roughly 210 watts at 70 RPM on a 10 per cent gradient. A 34x34 drops that to around 195 watts at the same cadence. After six hours of riding, those 15 watts are the difference between spinning and stalling.

Test your lowest gear on a steep climb at the end of a long ride. If you are below 55 RPM, fit a bigger cassette. Do it early in the training block so you adapt before race day.

Layering

Ax-les-Thermes can hit 35 degrees Celsius by midday. The Port de Pailhères summit can sit below 10 degrees. That is a 25-degree swing in a single day, and it is entirely normal.

Start in shorts and a short-sleeve jersey with sun cream applied. Pocket a lightweight gilet, arm warmers, and a packable rain jacket. The rain jacket is not optional — afternoon Pyrenean thunderstorms are common and the descent from the Pailhères on wet roads in a soaked jersey at 60kph will drop your core temperature dangerously fast.

Tyres

Run 28mm minimum, 30mm if your frame allows. Wider tyres at lower pressures (70-80 PSI for a 75kg rider on 28mm) give better grip, better comfort, and lower rolling resistance on rough Pyrenean surfaces. The weight penalty is negligible over 170km.

Race Day Pacing

Here's where it gets really interesting. Pacing L'Ariégeoise is not the same problem as pacing an Alpine sportive. Alpine events reward finding a wattage and holding it. L'Ariégeoise rewards adjusting effort constantly across variable gradients.

Valleys and early riding: 65-70 per cent FTP. Conversational. No chasing groups.

Mid-route cols (including Chioula): 78-83 per cent FTP. Controlled. These cols are not the objective — they are the pathway to the objective.

Port de Pailhères — lower slopes: 80-85 per cent FTP. Resist the urge to push on the easier sections. The hard pitches are coming and they arrive without warning.

Port de Pailhères — steep sections: 85-90 per cent FTP on the kicks, dropping to 75-80 per cent on the brief easier sections. Use the respites to recover — shift gear, lift cadence, breathe.

The descent and finish: Conservative. Safe. The job is done.

Save everything for the Pailhères. Every watt you spend before it is a watt you do not have when the gradient kicks to 11 per cent at kilometre 12.

Common Mistakes

  1. Treating the Pailhères like an Alpine col. Alpine climbs are consistent — you find your power, you hold it. The Pailhères pitches and eases constantly. Riders who lock into a single wattage target explode on the steep sections and waste energy on the flat sections. Ride the gradient, not the power file.

  2. Under-gearing. A 34x28 cassette is not enough for this event. Full stop. If your longest gear is 34x28 and you weigh more than 65kg, you will be grinding below 55 RPM on the steep pitches of the Pailhères on tired legs. Fit a 32 or 34-tooth cassette.

  3. Ignoring the temperature swing. Riders who start in full sun at 30 degrees and leave the rain jacket at the hotel arrive at the Pailhères summit in 8-degree temperatures with a wet descent ahead. Carry the layers. The weight is nothing compared to the cost of getting it wrong.

  4. Underfuelling in the first three hours. The valleys feel easy. The legs feel good. Eating feels unnecessary. And then the Pailhères arrives and the glycogen is gone. Start eating at kilometre one and do not stop. Underfuelling is the single most common reason riders abandon on the grand parcours.

  5. Choosing the wrong route. The 110km route with 3,000m of climbing is a serious Pyrenean event. If your longest ride in the last six months is under 5 hours and your longest climb is under 25 minutes, the grand parcours will hurt more than it needs to. Finishing the 110km with a grin beats finishing the 170km in the dark — or not finishing it at all.

Travel and Logistics

Getting there. Ax-les-Thermes is approximately 130km south of Toulouse, which has an international airport with direct flights from several European cities. The drive takes around 90 minutes. Carcassonne (120km) and Barcelona (250km) are alternatives. Hire a car — public transport to Ax-les-Thermes is limited.

Accommodation. A thermal spa town with a decent range of hotels and rental properties. Book early — the event fills the town. Staying in Ax itself puts you within walking distance of the start line and the event village.

Entry. EUR50-80 depending on timing. The grand parcours sells out. Register early.

Arrival. Get there 2-3 days before. Ride a section of the early route at a tourist pace to settle the legs after travel. Check your bike — derailleurs shift differently after a car journey. Get your race pack from the event village.

Bike logistics. If flying, a bike box or bag is essential. Build the bike the day you arrive and ride it the next day to confirm everything works.

Recovery Plan

The 48 hours after L'Ariégeoise matter. A 7-10 hour day with 4,600m of climbing creates significant muscle damage, glycogen depletion, and systemic fatigue.

Immediately post-event: 1-1.5g of carbohydrate per kg of bodyweight within 30 minutes. Protein — 20-30g. Hydrate until your urine runs clear. The thermal baths in Ax-les-Thermes are a genuine recovery tool — warm water promotes circulation and contrast bathing reduces inflammation.

Days 1-3: No structured riding. Walk. Stretch. Sleep. If you must ride, spin for 30-45 minutes embarrassingly easy.

Days 4-7: Light Zone 1-2 riding, 1-2 hours maximum. No climbing. No intensity. Give it the full week.

Week 2: Resume normal riding gradually. One quality session mid-week — 2x10 minutes at sweet spot — to check the legs without overloading them.
