Gut training. Asker Jeukendrup's research on multiple transportable carbohydrates established that the gut adapts to higher intake rates with practice. A 2:1 glucose-fructose blend allows absorption rates above 60g/hour. But the gut only handles race-day intake if you have trained it during at least 4-5 long rides in the build phase. Start practising at 60g/hour in week 5 and build to 80-90g/hour by week 12.

Solid food strategy. After hour 6, pure gels start to taste like punishment. Plan for solid food at every aid station — French mountain aid stations typically offer bread, cheese, fruit, dried sausage, and cake. Italian aid stations add pasta and rice. Eat what appeals. Palatability matters at hour 10 in a way it does not at hour 2.

Caffeine. Save it for the second half. A caffeine gel at the base of the Col de la Forclaz (around hour 10-12) sharpens focus for the hardest climbing section. Another caffeine hit for the final climb. Do not front-load caffeine — it loses its edge if you have been dosing all day.

Equipment and Gear

Gearing. Let me break this down. A standard compact (50/34) with an 11-28 cassette is fine for most sportives. The Tour de Mont Blanc is not most sportives. After 250km and 6,000m of climbing, your legs cannot produce the torque they produced at km 50. A 34x32 is the minimum. A 34x34 is sensible. And a sub-compact crankset — 48/31 or 46/30 — is what experienced ultra-distance riders choose for this event. Do not rely on a single light source for a ride that may have you descending the Col des Montets at 23:00.

Alpine kit layers. The temperature range on this ride is extraordinary. The valley floor at midday might be 25-30°C. The Col du Petit Saint-Bernard summit at 2,188m might be 8-10°C. Race Day Pacing Strategy

The Tour de Mont Blanc punishes early aggression more than almost any other event. 330km is long enough that a 10-watt overshoot in the first 100km costs you 30 watts of capacity in the final 100km. Here is how to split the day.

Kilometres 0-100 (hours 1-4). Ride at 60-68% FTP. This feels slow. It is supposed to feel slow. The Col des Saisies and Cormet de Roselend are the warm-up, not the race. Stay in the bottom half of Zone 2 on the climbs. Eat and drink on schedule. Kilometres 100-200 (hours 4-8). The Col du Petit Saint-Bernard and the Aosta Valley. Ride the Petit Saint-Bernard at 65-72% FTP — this is a 25km climb and it needs to feel controlled, not contested. Kilometres 200-270 (hours 8-13). The Col de la Forclaz and Col des Montets. This is where the event begins. Every watt you saved in the first 200km is available here. Ride the Forclaz at 70-78% FTP — the hardest sustainable effort of the day, not the hardest effort you can produce. The Col des Montets is shorter but arrives on destroyed legs. Pace it on power, not feeling. By now, your perceived effort will be 8/10 at what is actually 70% FTP. Trust the numbers.

Kilometres 270-330 (hours 13-18). The final climb and return. Ride at whatever wattage you can sustain without stopping. This is not a pacing problem — it is a willpower problem solved by fuelling. Eat a caffeine gel at the base. Take 200ml of cola at any aid station. Spin. Do not look at the summit. Look at the next kilometre marker.

Common Mistakes

Underfuelling the first 100km. The most common mistake on ultra-distance events, and the least fixable. Riders skip eating in the first 3-4 hours because they "don't feel hungry yet." By the time they feel the deficit, they are 2,000 calories behind and no amount of gel-stuffing will close the gap. Eat from kilometre one. 60-80g of carbs per hour, every hour, no exceptions.

Going too hard on the early cols. The Col des Saisies and Cormet de Roselend are beautiful climbs on fresh legs in the morning light. The adrenaline of the start and the speed of the riders around you push the pace above sustainable. A 3.5 W/kg rider who climbs the Saisies at 3.2 W/kg has 0.3 W/kg in the bank for the Forclaz 10 hours later. A 3.5 W/kg rider who climbs the Saisies at 3.5 W/kg has nothing left. The arithmetic is that simple.

Not training long enough rides. If your longest ride before the Tour de Mont Blanc is 5 hours, you are guessing about hours 6-18. The guess is almost always wrong. One ride of 7-8 hours with 4,000m+ of climbing — with full fuelling rehearsal — is the minimum. Riders who skip it because they "don't have time for an 8-hour ride" are the riders who DNF at km 260 because they did not know what their body does after hour 10.

Ignoring night riding preparation. The final 60-100km will happen in darkness for most finishers. Descending an Alpine col at 50 km/h with a front light you have never used before is dangerous. Climbing a gradient you cannot see the top of, in silence, with fatigued legs, is psychologically brutal if you have never experienced it. Two training rides that finish in darkness — one including a descent — removes the surprise.

Wrong gearing. A 50/34 with an 11-28 cassette produces a lowest gear of 34/28. On a 7% gradient after 250km, that means grinding at 45-50 RPM unless you still have 3.5+ W/kg available. Most riders do not. A 34x32 or 34x34 adds 10-15 RPM at the same power, which is the difference between spinning to the summit and walking to it. Test your gearing on a steep local climb at the end of a long ride. If you are below 60 RPM in your easiest gear, change the cassette before you book flights.

Travel and Logistics

Getting there. Geneva is the closest major airport, roughly 80km from the typical start location. Chamonix and the surrounding villages are also accessible via the Mont Blanc Tunnel from Italy. Most international riders fly into Geneva and hire a car.

Bike transport. Bike box or bike bag on the flight. Most local bike shops in the Chamonix valley offer assembly and basic mechanical support, but arrive 2-3 days early and build the bike yourself with time to ride 30-40km and check everything under load.

Accommodation. Book early. The event fills the local villages. Chamonix, Megève, and the villages around the Col des Saisies are the most common bases. A hotel with secure bike storage, breakfast included, and proximity to the start line is worth the premium. The night before the event, you need sleep — not logistics.

Registration. Typically opens 4-6 months before the event. Entry is around EUR 120-150 depending on the year. Registration usually includes feed stations, timing, and event support. Read the technical requirements carefully — lights are mandatory, minimum equipment lists are enforced, and medical certificates may be required.

Pre-ride. Ride 30-40km of the opening section 2-3 days before the event. Feel the gradients under your gearing. Check descents for road surface. Identify the first aid station location. This ride is reconnaissance, not training — ride at Zone 1 and be back for lunch.

Recovery Plan

Day of finish. Recovery shake within 30 minutes of crossing the line — 30-40g protein, 60-80g carbs. Real meal within 90 minutes. Rehydrate with electrolytes. Elevate legs for 20-30 minutes. Days 4-7. Easy spinning — 30-60 minutes at Zone 1. No climbing, no intensity. The legs will feel surprisingly good on day 5, and the temptation is to test them. Resist it. The muscular system recovers faster than the connective tissue, and a hard ride on day 6 risks the tendon and ligament niggles that turn a great achievement into a month off the bike.

Days 8-10. Resume normal easy riding. Introduce 10-15 minute tempo efforts on day 9-10 if the legs respond. If they do not, extend the recovery by another 3-4 days. There is no rush. You just rode 330km around Mont Blanc. The fitness is banked. Let the body absorb it.

The distance alone puts it in ultra-endurance territory, and the cumulative climbing across six or seven major cols makes it a genuine test of physical and mental resilience. Only events like the Otztaler Radmarathon approach this level of difficulty, and even the Otztaler is shorter in distance.
What is the time limit for the Tour de Mont Blanc?
The time limit is typically 18-20 hours depending on the year. Most riders finish in 14-18 hours. Strong riders with 3.5+ W/kg can finish in 12-14 hours.
