The TOUR TransAlp starts somewhere in southern Bavaria — Mittenwald, Garmisch, the precise town shifts year to year — and finishes on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. Between those two points: seven stages, three countries, 600-700 kilometres, and somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 metres of climbing across passes that include the Brenner, the Timmelsjoch, the Passo Rombo, and whichever Dolomite cols the organisers string together that year. Stages run 80-130km daily with 1,800-3,500m of vertical. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious amateur multi-day cycling races in Europe, and it has a reputation that precedes it.

But the TransAlp is not the Haute Route and it is not an Ötztaler with hotel transfers bolted on. The defining feature is the team format. You race in pairs. Two riders, one team time, and a maximum gap of two minutes between partners at the finish of every stage. That rule changes everything. Your individual W/kg matters, but it matters less than your combined W/kg — and far less than your ability to ride together under pressure, day after day, on climbs where one of you is suffering and the other has to decide whether to push or wait.

What the TransAlp Actually Demands

Each stage runs 80-130km with 1,800-3,500m of climbing. Multiply that by seven and the total sits at roughly 700km and 17,000m of ascent — numbers comparable to a Haute Route, except here you are tied to another rider for every metre of it.

Daily saddle time for most amateur teams lands between 4 and 7 hours per stage. The short-sharp stages — 80km, 3,000m of climbing — are deceptively hard because the gradient is relentless. The long rolling stages — 130km, 2,000m — feel easier on paper but pile hours into tired legs. By day five the distinction blurs. Everything hurts regardless of the profile.

The two-minute rule is enforced. If your partner finishes more than two minutes behind you, the team time defaults to the slower rider's time plus a penalty. In practice, this means you ride together. Not "in the same postcode." Together. On a 25km col at 7%, if one rider sits at 3.5 W/kg and the other at 2.8 W/kg, the gap opens in five minutes and never closes. The stronger rider either sits up and paces the weaker one, or the team blows apart before the summit.

The TransAlp is a GC event with cumulative timing. Some teams race the sharp end. Most are racing themselves — chasing a daily target, managing fatigue, and trying to reach Riva del Garda on day seven with both riders upright and intact. That completion culture is strong, but do not mistake it for softness. Seven days in the Alps is seven days in the Alps. The mountains do not care about your team's vibe.

The Team Dynamic: Training as a Partnership

This is where the TransAlp separates from every other multi-day event. The team format is not a novelty bolted onto a stage race. It is the race.

Know each other's numbers. Before you enter, both riders need a current, tested FTP. Use a proper 20-minute test or a ramp test — not a number from last season. If one rider sits at 3.4 W/kg and the other at 3.0 W/kg, you know the team ceiling is 3.0 W/kg on climbs. That is not a problem if both riders accept it. It becomes a problem when the stronger rider tries to drag the weaker one above threshold for six hours a day. That team cracks on day three.

Train together at race effort. The most common mistake in TransAlp preparation is training solo and then turning up expecting the team to work. Solo training builds your engine. Partner training builds the team that finishes. From week 5 of your build, at least one ride per week should be with your partner, on terrain that includes a sustained climb of 30-60 minutes. Ride side by side. Talk. Set a wattage ceiling that both riders can hold. If one of you is visibly suffering, drop the pace — do not wait for the gap to open.

Establish a communication system. On a 90-minute Alpine col, verbal cues matter more than power data. Agree on signals before you race. "I'm good" means pace is sustainable. "Steady" means the weaker rider is approaching threshold. "Ease off" means the pace needs to drop five to ten watts immediately. Whatever language you use, agree it in training and use it often enough that it becomes automatic. The worst time to invent a communication system is on the Timmelsjoch at hour four of day five.

Plan for the crack. One of you will have a bad day. Maybe both of you will, but not on the same day. The stronger rider's job when the weaker rider cracks is simple: drop the pace, ride alongside, feed them, talk to them, and get them to the finish. The weaker rider's job when they feel good and their partner is struggling is exactly the same. This is a team event. The team finishes together or neither rider's time counts.

The 2-minute rule in practice. On flat and rolling terrain, staying together is simple — draft, rotate, ride a steady tempo. On climbs, it requires discipline. The faster climber should ride at the slower climber's pace plus a small buffer — not pushing ahead and waiting at the top. Waiting at the top means stopping, cooling down, restarting cold, and watching the clock. Riding together is faster for the team than riding apart and waiting.

Route Character: Bavaria to Lake Garda

The TransAlp crosses three countries and three distinct cycling landscapes, and the character of the riding shifts dramatically as you move south.

Germany (stages 1-2). The opening stages roll through Bavarian foothills — passes that are long and steady rather than brutally steep. Gradients sit around 5-7%. The roads are wide, well-surfaced, and the altitude stays below 1,500m. These stages are the warm-up. They lull you. The Bavarian crowds are enthusiastic, the scenery is postcard-perfect, and the temptation to race hard on fresh legs is enormous. Teams that race the first two days like a criterium are the teams limping through Austria on day four. Use Germany to calibrate your team pace. Ride at 70-75% FTP on the climbs, eat consistently, and treat the opening stages as a dress rehearsal for the week ahead.

Austria (stages 3-5). The Austrian stages are the meat of the event. This is where the high passes land — the Brenner, the Timmelsjoch, or the Passo Rombo depending on the year's routing. Altitudes push above 2,000m. Gradients hit 10-12% on the steep pitches. The valley roads between climbs are fast and exposed to crosswinds that catch tired riders in the open. Some stages include short unpaved or gravel sections — farm tracks, forest roads, mountain paths that are rideable but demand attention on tired legs and skinny tyres. The Austrian stages are also where the cumulative load starts revealing itself. Day three feels manageable. Day four feels different. Day five, on a stage with 3,000m+ of climbing, is where every team discovers whether their preparation was sufficient or aspirational.

Italy (stages 6-7). The Italian stages drop into the Dolomites and roll toward Lake Garda. The climbing is still serious — Mendel Pass, the Adige valley climbs — but the descents are longer, the roads twist more, and the Italian spectators line the roadside with an energy that Bavaria and Austria do not match. The final kilometres into Riva del Garda are flat along the lake, and they feel earned in a way that is hard to describe until you have ridden there.

Weather across the route. Alpine summer means valley starts at 15C in the mist, midday climbing in 30C+ sun, and afternoon thunderstorms that arrive without much warning and drop temperatures 15 degrees in twenty minutes. Every stage requires a gilet in the back pocket minimum. The high passes above 2,000m can be 5-8C at the summit even on a hot day, and the descents are 20-30 minutes of cold air on a sweat-soaked body. Plan for all of it, every day.

16-Week Training Framework

Weeks 1-4: Base (Individual)

Volume: 8-10 hours per week. Four to five rides, 80% at Zone 2. This block is individual. Build the aerobic engine that the team effort sits on. Long ride builds from 3 hours to 4.5 hours over the four weeks with 800-1,200m of climbing.

Gym work twice weekly: Bulgarian split lunges (3x10 each leg), step-ups with dumbbells (3x12 each leg), single-leg hip thrusts (3x12), and core — dead bugs, side planks, pallof presses. Keep loads moderate. The goal is resilience for seven days of climbing, not peak strength numbers.

Weeks 5-8: Build (Introduce Partner Rides)

Volume: 10-13 hours per week. Two quality sessions appear alongside the endurance base.

Session 1 — Threshold. 4x10 minutes at 95-100% FTP, 5 minutes recovery between. Progress to 3x15 minutes by week 8. Do this one solo — it is individual engine work.

Session 2 — Team pacing ride. One ride per week with your partner, 3-4 hours, including at least one sustained climb of 30-45 minutes. Ride at the weaker rider's comfortable tempo. Practice the communication system. If you do not live near your partner, this is the block where you make the travel happen at least twice.

Long ride climbs to 5 hours. Gym work continues but drops to once weekly.

Weeks 9-13: Peak (Back-to-Back Blocks with Partner)

Volume: 12-16 hours per week. The back-to-back work starts and this is where the TransAlp build diverges from a solo event.

Weekend structure. Saturday: 5-6 hours with 1,500-2,500m of climbing, with your partner. Sunday: 4-5 hours with 1,000-1,800m of climbing, with your partner. Ride at team pace, not individual pace. The point is to simulate finishing a stage, recovering overnight in a shared environment, and starting again the next morning with both riders functional.

Do this at least four times in the final twelve weeks. If you can manage a long weekend — three consecutive days of 4-5 hours each — that is even closer to the real demand.

Midweek quality reduces to one threshold session (3x12 minutes at FTP) plus recovery and endurance rides. You cannot peak the weekend blocks and midweek intensity simultaneously.

Weeks 14-16: Taper

Volume drops 30-40% in week 14, another 50% in weeks 15-16. Keep short sharpeners: 3x5 minutes at threshold, 4x90 seconds at VO2max intensity. One final partner ride of 2-3 hours at an easy pace in week 14. By week 16, ride short, ride easy, eat well, sleep long. The taper is not the time to find fitness. It is the time to shed fatigue and arrive in Bavaria with fresh legs and a functioning partnership.

Key Sessions

Partner pacing ride. 3-4 hours at the weaker rider's sustainable pace. Include one 30-45 minute climb where both riders hold a wattage ceiling agreed before the ride starts. If one rider cannot hold the pace, the team slows. This session teaches restraint for the stronger rider and threshold tolerance for the weaker one. Run it weekly from week 5 onward.

Back-to-back climbing weekend. Saturday 5-6 hours, 1,500-2,500m climbing. Sunday 4-5 hours, 1,000-1,800m climbing. Both days with your partner. Rehearse the post-ride recovery protocol: shake within 30 minutes, real meal within 90 minutes, compression, early night. Sunday morning tells you whether the partnership works under fatigue.

Team communication drill. During any partner ride, practise calling pace changes out loud. The rider at the back calls the effort level every 10 minutes. The front rider adjusts. Swap positions every 15-20 minutes on the climbs — not because it matters aerodynamically, but because the visual cue of riding behind a struggling partner is different from riding behind a comfortable one, and both riders need to read it accurately.

Recovery ride discipline. One ride per week at strictly sub-65% FTP, 60-90 minutes. This is the session most amateurs skip or accidentally turn into a tempo ride. On the TransAlp, your recovery between stages is the performance lever. If you cannot ride easy in training, you cannot recover between stages in the race.

Recovery and Logistics Across Seven Days

The TransAlp is a point-to-point event across three countries. You do not return to the same hotel each night. Your kit bag goes on a truck in the morning and arrives at the next stage town by evening. This logistical format demands planning that a single-venue event does not.

Accommodation. Entry packages vary — some include hotels, some include camping village access. If you are in the camping village, invest in a decent sleeping mat and earplugs. Seven nights of poor sleep compounds into team performance by day four. If you can upgrade to hotel accommodation, do it. The EUR difference across the week is worth less than the sleep quality.

Kit bags. Pack two complete riding kits so one is always washed and drying. Include a recovery set: flip-flops, loose shorts, a clean t-shirt. You will spend every evening in the same routine: finish, shake, shower, eat, stretch, sleep. Make that routine as frictionless as possible.

Between-stage recovery. The protocol is the same every day, without exception. Recovery shake (carb-protein, 3:1 ratio) within 30 minutes of finishing. Real meal within 90 minutes — rice, pasta, protein, vegetables. 20 minutes of gentle stretching or foam rolling. Compression garments for the evening. Lights out by 21:30 if the schedule allows. The riders treating the event village like a social occasion until midnight are the riders calling for mechanical support at 50km on day five.

Nutrition Strategy

On the bike. 80-90g carbohydrate per hour, every stage, from the gun. That is a 90g/hour drink mix in the bottles plus one gel or bar every 45 minutes. Train your gut to this volume during the build phase — the first time you eat 80g/hour should not be stage one of a seven-day race. The fuelling calculator helps dial this to your weight and effort level.

Team fuelling advantage. The partnership format creates an option solo riders do not have. Split the carrying load. One rider carries extra gels, the other carries extra bottles. Share at feed stations. If one rider is struggling, the other feeds them — physically handing over a gel at the right moment is a team tactic, not a nice gesture.

Between stages. Daily carb intake during race week climbs to 8-10g per kg of body weight. A 75kg rider is eating 600-750g of carbs across the day. Protein sits at 1.5-2g per kg to support overnight muscle repair. This is more food than feels normal. Eat it anyway. Calorie deficits compound across seven days with total predictability — the team that under-eats on days one through three cracks on day five. Both partners should monitor each other's eating. If your partner is picking at dinner on day three, that is a red flag. Get calories into them. A team conversation about food intake is a performance conversation, not a personal one.

Hydration. Alpine heat in the valleys pushes sweat rates above 1 litre per hour on the climbs. Add electrolytes to every bottle. The feed stations are well-stocked but the gaps between them can stretch 40-50km on some stages — carry enough that missing one does not create a crisis.

Kit and Equipment

Bike. A road bike with compact gearing. Disc brakes are the sensible choice for seven days of Alpine descending on fatigued hands and arms. Rim brakes work, but by day six your grip strength is not what it was on day one.

Gearing. 34x32 minimum cassette, 34x34 if your rear derailleur takes it. The maths is simple: on day six, your climbing power is 85-90% of day-one power. The gradient has not changed. The gear you need has. Riders running a 28-tooth maximum cassette on day six of the TransAlp are grinding at 55rpm on 10% pitches and paying for it in their knees.

Tyres. 28-30mm, tubeless preferred. Some stages include gravel or unpaved sections — forest tracks, farm roads — where 25mm clinchers bounce and slide while 30mm tubeless roll through without drama. Carry a tubeless plug kit, a spare tube, and a mini-pump. A flat tyre on an unpaved section at km 90 of day four needs a fix that works, not a perfect fix.

Daily carry. Two bottles, food for 3-4 hours (split with partner), gilet, arm warmers, lightweight rain jacket. One partner carries the team's spare tube and tools. The other carries the team's extra food. Distribute the weight consciously — the lighter rider should not also be carrying the heavier load.

Common Mistakes

Mismatched partner fitness. A 0.5 W/kg gap between partners is manageable if both riders train together and accept the team pace. A 1.0 W/kg gap is a week of frustration for both riders. The stronger rider rides bored, the weaker rider rides buried. Match your partner on climbing ability before you enter.

Not training together. Solo fitness plus solo fitness does not equal team fitness. Teams that train together four times in the build phase finish faster and with less friction than teams that meet for the first time at registration. The partnership is a skill. Train it.

Ignoring the two-minute rule. The stronger rider rides ahead on every climb, waits at the top, restarts cold, and the team time still reflects the gap. Riding together — at the same pace, side by side, communicating — is faster for the team than riding apart and regrouping.

Insufficient back-to-back training. A five-hour Saturday ride does not prepare you for what happens when you wake up on Sunday and do it again. And again on Monday. The back-to-back weekend with your partner is the single most important training block for this event. Three to four of them in the final twelve weeks. No substitute exists.

Poor recovery discipline. The riders who skip the recovery shake, skip the stretching, stay up late, and eat whatever the village serves are the riders whose day-five stage time is 40 minutes slower than their day-one time. Recovery is a performance intervention. Treat it like one from stage one.

Wrong tyres for the gravel sections. 23mm or 25mm clinchers on an unpaved Austrian farm track at km 95 of a mountain stage is a puncture waiting to happen. Run 28-30mm, run tubeless, carry a plug kit. The time lost to a puncture and a roadside repair on a team event is double the cost — both riders stop, both riders lose time, both riders restart cold.
