There's a particular quality to the light on an October morning in the Pennines when it's 7 degrees and the tarmac is still damp. You're standing at the bottom of a lane that kicks up at 15 per cent, number pinned to a jersey that's too thin for the temperature but too thick for what's about to happen to your body. Around you, fifty or sixty other riders are doing the same calculations: watts, weight, how much pain they're willing to tolerate for somewhere between three and twelve minutes.

The marshals are calling numbers. Yours is coming. The rider ahead of you rolls to the line, clips in, and goes. Thirty seconds later, it's you.

Hill climb racing is the oldest competitive format in British cycling, and the simplest. One rider, one hill, one clock. No drafting, no bunch dynamics, no team tactics. The result is a pure expression of what you can produce when gravity is the only opponent. It is also, per minute, the most painful thing you will do on a bike. And that's the appeal.

What Is Hill Climb Racing?

Hill climbs are individual time trials held on steep roads, typically lasting between 3 and 15 minutes. The format dates back to the late 1800s in Britain and Ireland, when road racing was banned and cyclists took to the hills because the authorities didn't bother patrolling the steep lanes of Lancashire and Yorkshire.

The season runs from late September through the end of October, peaking with the National Hill Climb Championship — the event that draws the best climbers in the country to a single gradient. Events are organised by local clubs and run under Cycling Time Trials (CTT) regulations. Entry fees are modest (typically $7 to $15), the atmosphere is communal, and the competition is open to everyone from first-timers to national champions. You don't need a specific licence category to race. If you can ride a bike up a hill, you can enter.

Most hill climbs are short — some as brief as 90 seconds, most between 3 and 10 minutes. A few longer ones stretch to 15 or even 20 minutes. The gradients vary from a steady 6 per cent to brutal ramps above 20. The format rewards a specific kind of fitness: the ability to sustain power at or above VO2max for a short, defined duration. That's different from road racing fitness, different from sportive fitness, different from time trialling on the flat. It's its own discipline with its own training demands.

What makes hill climbs distinct from other racing isn't just the gradient. It's the isolation. In a road race, you can shelter in a group. In a time trial, aerodynamics dominate and you can build into the effort across longer distances. In a hill climb, you are alone on a steep road from the first pedal stroke, and the effort is maximal from the gun. There is no warm-up within the event. There is no group dynamic to carry you. The clock starts, and you produce everything you have until the clock stops.

The Physiology: Power, Weight, and the Clock

Hill climbing performance reduces to a clean equation: power-to-weight ratio multiplied by time. At gradients above 8 per cent, aerodynamic drag becomes almost irrelevant — gravitational resistance dominates — so the variable is watts per kilogram sustained for the duration of the climb. The energy systems that matter depend on climb duration.

Climbs under 5 minutes lean heavily on anaerobic capacity. Your body is burning through glycolytic energy stores at a rate that cannot be sustained. VO2max matters, but so does peak anaerobic power and the ability to tolerate the acidosis that comes with it. Riders with high short-duration power relative to their weight dominate these events.

Climbs between 5 and 10 minutes sit in the overlap zone between anaerobic capacity and VO2max power. The effort is long enough that aerobic contribution is significant, but short enough that riders who can push above their sustainable ceiling for the full duration gain an edge. This is the range where VO2max training produces the biggest returns.

Climbs over 10 minutes become increasingly aerobic. Threshold power and the percentage of VO2max you can sustain for that duration become the primary limiters. These longer events reward the same physiology as a short time trial: high FTP relative to body weight.

Across all durations, body weight is the other variable. Andy Coggan's work on climbing performance models shows that at 10 per cent gradient, reducing body weight by 1 kg has roughly the same effect on speed as adding 4-5 watts of sustained power. For a 70 kg rider producing 350 watts, dropping to 69 kg is equivalent to finding 5 more watts. That trade-off makes weight management for hill climbs more significant than for any other cycling discipline — though the path to lighter should always be managed carefully, not crash-dieted.

Training for Hill Climbs

Most cyclists train for hill climb season with the same programme they use for everything else. That works up to a point. But if you want to race hill climbs seriously — and by seriously I mean setting a personal target and building toward it — the training needs to shift in the 6 to 8 weeks before the October season.

VO2max intervals. These are the centrepiece. Three to 5-minute efforts at 105-120 per cent of FTP, with equal or slightly longer recovery between efforts. Five to seven repeats per session. Two sessions per week during the build phase. The adaptations — increased stroke volume, improved oxygen extraction, higher mitochondrial density — are the specific physiological changes that determine hill climb performance. Stephen Seiler's research on polarised training supports concentrating high-intensity work into these short, severe blocks rather than spreading moderate intensity across the week.

Race-duration efforts. If your target climb is 6 minutes, you need to practise 6-minute maximal efforts in training. Not threshold work, not sweet spot — maximal, all-in efforts that simulate race intensity. Once a week, do a time trial effort on a local climb that approximates the duration and gradient of your target event. Use the Climb Time calculator to estimate your target time.

Hill repeats. The bread and butter. Find a 3 to 5-minute climb at 6-10 per cent gradient. Ride up at race intensity, descend easy, repeat. Start with four repeats and build to seven or eight across the training block. These teach your body and brain what sustained climbing effort feels like, and they expose pacing errors before race day.

Threshold maintenance. While the focus shifts toward short, high-end work, threshold power still matters — especially for longer climbs. One session per week at 90-100 per cent of FTP for 2 x 15 or 2 x 20 minutes keeps the FTP from eroding while you chase the top end.

Weight management. The hill climb season coincides with the end of the road season, which means you've had months to manage body composition. The final 4-6 weeks before racing are not the time to cut calories aggressively. You need the energy to support the high-intensity training. If you're carrying excess weight, the work should have been done across the summer. Arriving at October lean and fuelled is better than arriving light and flat.

Volume reduction. Total training volume should drop slightly in the final 4 weeks. The quality of each session matters more than the hours. Cut easy rides shorter but keep the intensity sessions sharp. You're tapering for a peak event, not building a bigger base.

Pacing: The Art of Managing the Inevitable

Pacing a hill climb is different from pacing a time trial or a road race, because the duration is short enough that the anaerobic contribution is massive. Get it wrong and the cost is catastrophic — you don't fade gently, you blow up completely, and the last 90 seconds become a survival crawl at half the watts you started with.

Short climbs (under 5 minutes). A positive split is not just acceptable, it's optimal. Start hard — above your sustainable power for the duration — and manage the fade. The anaerobic energy system contributes so heavily to a 3 to 4-minute effort that holding back at the start leaves energy unused. The key is knowing the difference between "hard start, controlled fade" and "reckless start, catastrophic blow-up." The fade should be 5-10 per cent of power across the effort, not 30 per cent.

Medium climbs (5 to 8 minutes). The transition zone. Start strong but not reckless — at a power you could theoretically hold for 8-9 minutes — then increase through the second half as you read how much you have left. The first minute should feel hard but controlled. The last minute should feel desperate.

Longer climbs (over 10 minutes). Pace more conservatively in the first third. Build through the middle third. Empty everything in the final third. This is closer to standard time trial pacing, and blowing up early on a 12-minute climb is extremely expensive — you have too many minutes left to ride at the wrong intensity. The Andrew Feather principle applies here: steady power beats peak surges over anything longer than about 8 minutes.

Practical pacing tool. Divide the climb into thirds, either by time or by landmarks you've identified from reconnaissance. Assign a target power range to each third. For a 6-minute climb, that might be 110 per cent FTP for minutes 1-2, 105 per cent for minutes 3-4, and everything remaining for minutes 5-6. Write those numbers on your stem tape.

Bike Setup: Where Every Gram Counts

This is the one discipline where weight obsession is rational. On a 10 per cent gradient at hill climb speeds (typically 12-18 km/h), aerodynamic drag accounts for less than 15 per cent of total resistance. The rest is gravitational. Every gram you carry up the hill costs energy, and the effort is short enough that there is no opportunity to amortise that cost across a long ride.

Strip the bike. Remove bottle cages (you don't need water for 5 minutes), saddlebag, frame pump, computer mount if you're not using it for pacing. Some riders remove bar tape from the drops if they won't use the drops. Others remove one brake lever if the course is a dead-end (there's no descent to worry about). These are marginal gains that add up when you're removing 200-400g total.

Wheels. Choose the lightest set you own. Climbing wheels — low-profile, lightweight rims — are ideal. Deep-section aero wheels are counterproductive because the weight penalty is real and the aero advantage is irrelevant at climbing speeds. If you only have one wheelset, at least fit the lightest tyres you have.

Tyres. Lightweight clinchers or tubeless with low-rolling-resistance rubber. Continental GP5000 S TR, Vittoria Corsa Pro, or similar. Run them at the appropriate pressure for the road surface — not maximum pressure, but the pressure that balances rolling resistance and grip. For a 70 kg rider on reasonable tarmac, that's typically 75-85 psi rear and 70-80 psi front on 25mm tyres.

Chainset and gearing. You need enough gear to maintain cadence on the gradient. Check the steepest section of your target climb and make sure your lowest gear lets you pedal at 75-80 RPM at your expected power output. A compact chainset (50/34) with an 11-34 cassette covers most hill climbs. For very steep events (above 15 per cent average), a sub-compact or a wider cassette may be necessary.

The bike itself. If you have multiple bikes, ride the lightest one. A dedicated hill climb bike at 5-6 kg is the domain of serious specialists, but choosing your 7.5 kg road bike over your 8.5 kg winter bike is free speed. The UCI minimum weight limit (6.8 kg) does not apply to CTT events, which is why you see hill climb bikes stripped to absurd levels.

The Warm-Up: Do Not Skip This

Starting a 5-minute maximal effort from cold is one of the most common mistakes in hill climb racing, and it's the easiest to fix. Your cardiovascular and metabolic systems need time to ramp up to the intensity you're about to demand. Without a thorough warm-up, the first 60-90 seconds of the climb are spent reaching a state your body should have been in before you started.

Protocol. Twenty to 30 minutes, progressive. Start at zone 1-2 for 10 minutes. Build to zone 3 for 5 minutes. Include two or three 30-second efforts at race intensity with 2 minutes easy between them. Finish the warm-up 5-10 minutes before your start time. Stay moving — soft-pedal or spin on the turbo — until you're called to the line.

Turbo trainer. Many hill climbers bring a turbo to the start. It lets you warm up properly regardless of the terrain around the start line, and it keeps you out of the cold. If you don't have a turbo, ride up and down a nearby road or do loops around the car park. The key is that your heart rate has been elevated and your legs have seen race-intensity power before the clock starts.

The cost of skipping it. On a 5-minute effort, the first 90 seconds account for 30 per cent of the total time. If those 90 seconds are spent at 85 per cent of what you could produce when warm, you've lost 10-15 seconds. That's the difference between mid-pack and a podium in most local hill climbs. On a 10-minute effort, the relative cost is smaller but still significant — you're leaving 5-10 seconds on the road for no good reason.

The Mental Game

Hill climbing hurts more per minute than almost anything else in cycling. A road race has surges of pain followed by recovery. A sportive has hard sections broken by easier terrain. A hill climb is a sustained effort at or above VO2max with no respite from the first pedal stroke to the finish. The mental challenge is managing that pain without backing off.

The voice that tells you to stop. Every hill climber knows it. Somewhere between the second and fourth minute of a maximal effort, a part of your brain starts negotiating. The legs are burning. The breathing is ragged. The voice says: "Ease off. You're going too hard. You can't hold this." In most cases, you can hold it. The brain's protective mechanism fires well before the body reaches its actual limit. Tim Noakes' central governor model describes this: the brain limits output to protect the organism, and the limit is almost always conservative.

Pacing landmarks. Break the climb into segments with visible markers — a tree, a cattle grid, a junction. Instead of thinking about the entire remaining effort, focus only on reaching the next landmark. This reduces the mental load from "I have four minutes of agony left" to "I just need to hold it to that gate." Smaller targets are more manageable targets.

Rehearsal. If possible, ride the course before race day. Knowing what's coming — where the gradient eases, where it steepens, where the finish line sits — removes uncertainty. Uncertainty feeds anxiety, and anxiety burns energy. The rider who knows every metre of the course uses mental energy for pushing power, not for wondering what's around the next bend.

Acceptance. The most effective mental approach for experienced hill climbers is simple acceptance: this is going to hurt, that's the nature of the event, and the hurt is temporary. Riders who fight the pain waste energy resisting it. Riders who accept it and maintain focus on power output and cadence perform better. This isn't motivational language — it's a practical approach to mental toughness in cycling that the sports psychology literature supports.

Famous UK Hill Climbs Worth Entering

Monsal Head (Derbyshire). A short, sharp ramp out of Monsal Dale that rears up at 20 per cent in places. Under 2 minutes for the fastest riders, but those 2 minutes are savage. A brilliant introduction to hill climb racing because it's over before you have time to pace anything — just pin it and hold on.

Winnats Pass (Derbyshire). A longer effort through a dramatic limestone gorge. Roughly 5-6 minutes for competitive riders, with consistent steep gradients and stunning scenery that you won't notice because your eyes will be fixed two metres ahead of your front wheel. The National Hill Climb has been held here multiple times.

Nick o' Pendle (Lancashire). An exposed moorland climb that averages around 8-9 per cent for about 7 minutes. Wind is a factor. Views are expansive if you can look up. A classic northern hill climb that tests sustained power rather than explosive short efforts.

The Rake, Ramsbottom (Lancashire). Twenty-five per cent gradient at its steepest. Roughly 90 seconds of controlled violence. The kind of climb where you choose your gear at the bottom and there's no changing it. Pure anaerobic punishment that attracts a loyal and slightly masochistic crowd every October.

Bank Road, Matlock (Derbyshire). The site of multiple National championships. A 4 to 5-minute effort that demands everything — threshold power, VO2max capacity, pacing awareness, and the willingness to hold on when the gradient bites toward the top.

These events fill up. Enter early when listings appear in August and September. Start with a local club event — your regional CTT association will have a list — before targeting the marquee climbs.

Hill Climbing for Masters Riders

Hill climb racing is disproportionately well-suited to masters riders, and the age-group results prove it. Power-to-weight ratio declines with age, but it declines more slowly than peak sprint power or anaerobic capacity. A masters rider who has maintained VO2max through consistent training and carries low body weight can produce W/kg numbers that compete with riders 15 years younger.

The masters categories at hill climbs are well-supported and competitive. Forty-something riders regularly feature in the top quarter of open results, and the dedicated age-group competitions produce fierce racing. If you've spent the summer doing road races and finding that the surges and sprint finishes favour younger legs, hill climbs are a format where your physiology doesn't carry the same disadvantage.

There's also a motivational argument. By October, most riders have been racing or training hard since March. Motivation dips. Training quality drops. The season feels long. Hill climbs inject purpose into the tail end of the year — a clear, measurable goal that demands specific preparation. Many masters riders I talk to in the Roadman community describe hill climb season as the part of the year they look forward to most, precisely because it gives them a reason to stay sharp when the sportives and road races are done.

The specific physiology also rewards training consistency over raw talent. A 45-year-old who has done structured VO2max work and managed body composition across the season arrives at October with exactly the fitness that hill climbs demand. The 25-year-old with more raw ability but less structure often doesn't.

Finding and Entering Events

In the UK. Cycling Time Trials (CTT) is the governing body. Their website lists events by region and date. Your local CTT district website will have a dedicated hill climb calendar. Individual club websites and social media pages also advertise events. Most entries are online through the CTT system.

In Ireland. Cycling Ireland event listings cover most hill climb events. Club-organised events appear on club social media. The hill climb scene in Ireland is smaller than in the UK but growing, with events across the Wicklow Mountains, the Mournes, and other hilly regions.

Entry tips. Popular events fill quickly — Winnats Pass and the National Championship can sell out in days. Enter as soon as entries open, which is typically August or early September. Entry fees are low ($7 to $15 for most events). You'll need a CTT start sheet number or equivalent, but you don't need a racing licence for open events.

What to expect on the day. Arrive early. Sign on. Pin your number. Warm up. Wait for your start time. Ride up the hill as hard as you can. Collect your time at the top. Descend. Compare times with other riders over tea and cake at the village hall. The format is gloriously simple.

How many events to target. For your first season, two or three hill climbs across October is plenty. It gives you time to recover between events and to learn from each one. Experienced hill climbers might race every weekend through October, but the physical and mental demand of maximal efforts means recovery between events matters.

Why Hill Climbing Might Be the Best Thing You Do All Year

There is no bluffing in a hill climb. You can't hide in a group. You can't benefit from a lead-out. You can't sit on someone's wheel and contest a sprint. The result is yours — a time, set on a specific gradient, reflecting exactly what your body and mind could produce on that day. That kind of clarity is rare in cycling.

The community around hill climbing is also distinct. These events attract riders who love the sport at its most elemental. There is no prize money, no sponsorship drama, no aero helmet posturing. People race hard and then share cake. The conversations at the finish are about splits and gradients and what gear ratio worked on the steep section. It's cycling distilled to its essentials.

For masters riders looking for a racing format that rewards the fitness attributes they maintain longest — sustained aerobic power, low body weight, mental resilience — hill climbing is a natural fit. For riders who have never raced before, it's the most accessible entry point: show up, pin a number, ride up a hill. No bunch-riding skills required, no crash risk from other riders, no tactical complexity. Just effort.

And there's something specific about standing at the bottom of a 20 per cent ramp in October drizzle, knowing you're about to do something that hurts badly and doesn't last long, and choosing to do it anyway. That's the distilled version of why any of us ride.
