Here's what nobody tells you about periodisation for amateur cyclists: the model you pick matters far less than whether the model actually fits inside your life.

A World Tour rider builds their year around racing. Every week is designed around the competition calendar, with a full-time coaching staff adjusting training loads in real time. You have a job, a family, a mortgage, and maybe three events per year that you actually care about finishing well. Same sport. Completely different planning problem.

This article goes further — comparing the three dominant periodisation models, explaining which suits different amateur profiles, and walking through a full 12-month calendar that wraps around a working life. Because the best plan in sport science is worthless if it assumes you have 20 hours a week and zero responsibilities.

Three models, three philosophies

The periodisation conversation has fragmented over the past decade. Coaches and athletes throw around "traditional," "block," and "polarised" as if they're interchangeable, or as if one has definitively beaten the others. Neither is true. They answer different questions about training structure, and understanding what each model actually claims is the first step to choosing one.

Traditional linear periodisation

This is the model Joe Friel codified in The Cyclist's Training Bible and the one most coaching platforms default to. The year is divided into long phases — base, build, peak, transition — each lasting weeks to months. Within each phase, you develop multiple fitness qualities simultaneously: aerobic endurance and strength during base, threshold and VO2 max during build, race-specific sharpness during peak.

The underlying logic is sequential development. General fitness first, specific fitness later, peak at the end. Volume starts high and gradually decreases as intensity increases. It's clean, it's predictable, and for decades it was the only model most coaches used.

Where it works for amateurs: If you have 10-14 hours per week, a predictable schedule with minimal travel disruption, and one or two clear A-races separated by at least 12 weeks, traditional periodisation is still hard to beat. The long phases give your body time to absorb and consolidate each adaptation. The gradual intensity ramp reduces injury risk. The structure is simple enough to self-coach.

Where it falls apart: The model assumes consistency. A 12-week base phase works brilliantly if you actually complete 12 weeks of progressive aerobic work. But amateurs get sick, travel for work, lose a week to a family holiday, or simply can't hold 12 hours during a busy month. Traditional periodisation doesn't bend well. Miss two weeks mid-base and the entire timeline shifts — or worse, you pretend those weeks didn't happen and push forward on a foundation that isn't there.

The other problem is staleness. Eight weeks of predominantly Zone 2 riding, session after session, breaks some riders mentally before it breaks them physically. The monotony is part of the design — same stimulus, long exposure, deep adaptation — but it demands a discipline that competes with the rest of your life for attention.

Block periodisation

Vladimir Issurin formalised block periodisation in the early 2000s, and it has since reshaped how World Tour teams structure their mesocycles. The core idea: instead of developing multiple qualities in parallel across long phases, concentrate a single training stimulus into a short, intense block of 7-14 days. Hit one system hard, recover, move to the next system.

An Issurin-style block structure might look like this: a 10-day aerobic development block with six rides of 2.5-4 hours at Zone 2, followed by 4-5 days of recovery, followed by a 10-day threshold block with five sessions at 95-105% FTP, followed by recovery, followed by a VO2 max block. Each block has a single physiological target. Every session inside that block serves the same goal.

Where it works for amateurs: This is the model for time-crunched riders. If you have 6-9 hours per week and a schedule that changes week to week, block periodisation lets you extract meaningful adaptation from limited and irregular training time. Because each block focuses on one quality, the total dose of that stimulus — even in a compressed timeframe — can be enough to force adaptation. You don't need the long, steady accumulation that traditional periodisation demands.

Block periodisation also handles disruption better. If a work trip wipes out a week, you've lost one block, not corrupted an entire phase. You slot the recovery in, pick up the next block, and carry on. The modular structure is inherently more resilient to the chaos of adult life.

Where it falls apart: The intensity within each block is high, and the recovery between blocks is non-negotiable. Amateur riders who skip recovery days because they "feel fine" or who try to extend a block from 10 days to 18 days defeat the entire mechanism. The adaptation happens during the rest, not during the load.

There's also a ceiling on how many qualities you can develop in a season using pure blocks. If each block takes 10-14 days of loading plus 4-5 days of recovery, a 20-week preparation window holds roughly six to eight blocks. That's enough — but it requires disciplined sequencing. Get the order wrong (VO2 max before aerobic base, for example) and the blocks don't stack properly.

Polarised intensity distribution

Here's where the confusion starts. Prof. Stephen Seiler's polarised model is not a periodisation model. It's an intensity distribution model. It tells you how hard to train, not when to train what.

Seiler's research on elite endurance athletes — rowers, cross-country skiers, distance runners, cyclists — consistently shows that the best performers distribute their training in an approximately 80/20 split: roughly 80% of sessions at low intensity (Zone 1-2) and roughly 20% at high intensity (Zone 4-5), with very little time spent in the moderate Zone 3 range. This "avoid the middle" principle has become one of the most replicated findings in exercise physiology.

The polarised approach can sit inside either a traditional or block periodisation model. You can run a traditional 12-week base phase using polarised distribution (lots of Zone 2, one or two high-intensity sessions per week, minimal sweet spot). You can run Issurin-style blocks using polarised distribution within the high-intensity blocks (VO2 max rather than threshold as the primary hard session). The periodisation model tells you what phase you're in and what quality you're developing. The intensity distribution model tells you how the training volume breaks down across zones within that phase.

Where it works for amateurs: Polarised distribution protects against the single biggest mistake amateur cyclists make — training too hard on easy days and too easy on hard days. If you commit to truly easy Zone 2 for 80% of your riding and properly hard efforts for 20%, you avoid the grey zone that produces fatigue without producing fitness. For riders in their 40s and 50s, the generous recovery embedded in a polarised approach also respects the reality that adaptation takes longer as you age.

Where it falls apart: Pure polarised distribution is difficult to sustain for riders with fewer than 8-10 hours per week. If you only ride five times a week, 80/20 means four easy rides and one hard ride. That's often not enough high-intensity stimulus to develop threshold and VO2 max fitness for racing. This is why many coaches — including ones I've spoken to on the podcast — use a modified polarised approach during build phases, adding sweet spot work at 88-93% FTP as a time-efficient bridge between easy and hard. It's not pure Seiler. It's practical Seiler.

Choosing the right model for your life

Stop thinking about which model is "best." Start thinking about which model survives contact with your actual schedule.

Here's a framework. Answer three questions:

How many hours per week can you consistently train? Not your best week. Your realistic average across a month that includes a work deadline, a weekend family commitment, and one day where you just don't feel like riding. If that number is 10 or above, traditional periodisation works. If it's 6-9, lean toward block. Below 6, you're in survival mode and need a coach who can prioritise ruthlessly.

How predictable is your schedule? If you can reliably protect the same training days each week for three months at a stretch, traditional periodisation will deliver. If your calendar shifts week to week — different travel days, irregular work hours, variable childcare — block periodisation absorbs that variability better because each block is self-contained.

How many A-races do you have, and how far apart are they? One A-race with 20 weeks of preparation is the ideal case for traditional periodisation. Two A-races separated by 12+ weeks is manageable with either model. Three A-races or events separated by less than 10 weeks pushes you toward block periodisation, because you need the ability to build, peak, recover, and rebuild in compressed cycles.

Most amateurs end up with a hybrid. A traditionally-structured macro plan (annual phases of base, build, peak, transition) with block periodisation at the mesocycle level (concentrated stimulus blocks within each phase) and a broadly polarised intensity distribution underneath. That's not indecisive. That's what Dan Lorang does with World Tour riders, scaled to amateur hours.

The 12-month calendar: building it backwards

The annual plan starts with your events, not with January 1st. Pull out a calendar — paper, spreadsheet, whatever — and mark the following:

Your A-races. These are the events where you want to be at your absolute best. Two is ideal. Three is the maximum. More than three and you're kidding yourself — you'll arrive at each one underprepared or overtrained.

Your B-races. Events you want to perform well at but won't taper for. You ride these on training fitness, using them as race-specific sessions within your build phase.

Your non-negotiable life events. The work conference, the family holiday, the wedding weekend. These are recovery weeks whether you planned them or not. Put them on the calendar and design around them rather than pretending they won't happen.

Now work backwards from each A-race:

  • Weeks -2 to 0: Peak and taper. Volume drops 40-50%, intensity stays sharp.
  • Weeks -10 to -2: Build. Two quality sessions per week, race-specific long rides, progressive intensity.
  • Weeks -18 to -10: Base. Aerobic volume, strength work, one or two moderate-intensity sessions per week.
  • Week -20 to -18: Transition/on-ramp. Easy riding, gym re-introduction, no structured intervals.

That gives you a 20-week preparation window for your first A-race. If your June sportive is on June 20th, you're counting back to late January. Base starts in February. Build starts in April. Taper starts in early June.

After the A-race, you need genuine recovery. Not "easy riding for two days then back at it." Five to seven days of unstructured movement — rides if you want them, walks, nothing at all. Your body and your motivation both need this. I've seen riders skip post-event recovery three years running and wonder why they arrive at the next event feeling flat. The fatigue compounds. It's invisible until it isn't.

Spacing A-races: the maths that matters

Two A-races per year with 10-12 weeks between them is the sweet spot for most amateurs. Three is possible if you're disciplined about recovery. Here's why the spacing matters.

After a proper peak and A-race, you need 5-7 days of transition. Then you need 4-6 weeks of rebuild — not starting from scratch, because your aerobic base is still there, but re-establishing training load and specificity. Then 3-4 weeks of a compressed build phase targeting the demands of the second event. Then another 7-14 day taper.

Add it up: 1 week transition + 5 weeks rebuild + 4 weeks build + 2 weeks taper = 12 weeks minimum. Compress that below 10 weeks and you're cutting corners somewhere — usually the rebuild, which means you arrive at the second event running on residual fitness and accumulated fatigue rather than fresh adaptation.

Three A-races in a season requires stacking two of these inter-event cycles. That's 24 weeks of recovery-rebuild-build-peak, plus the 20-week preparation for the first event, plus transition periods. It fills a calendar year completely, which is precisely the point — there's no room for error. Miss a week to illness and the whole thing shifts.

For most riders with full-time jobs, two A-races is ambitious enough. Pick them carefully.

The working cyclist's weekly skeleton

Here's where periodisation meets Monday morning. You've got an annual plan with phases mapped out. But what does a single week actually look like when you've also got a job, a commute, and a family that expects to see you occasionally?

The answer is two anchors and flexible fill.

Anchor 1: The midweek quality session. This is your most important training session of the week. It happens on a fixed day — Tuesday or Wednesday evening, or early morning before work. During base, it's a moderate tempo or sweet spot session. During build, it's threshold or VO2 max intervals. During peak, it's short and sharp. This session is non-negotiable. You protect it the way you protect a work meeting with your most important client.

Anchor 2: The weekend long ride. Saturday or Sunday, whichever your family situation allows. During base, this is 2.5-4 hours of steady Zone 2. During build, it includes race-specific efforts — climbs at target power, pacing practice, or group ride intensity. During peak, it's shorter and controlled. If you can only ride one day at the weekend, this is it.

Flexible fill: Everything else. A 45-minute Zone 2 spin before work. A commute ride. A turbo session on a Thursday evening if the schedule allows. These sessions add volume and frequency, but they're not load-bearing. If work runs late, if the kids need picking up, if you're just tired — these are the sessions you move or drop without guilt. They support the structure. They don't define it.

The mistake most amateurs make is treating every session as equally important. They're not. Two quality sessions per week, consistently executed across 20 weeks, will produce better results than four sessions per week executed inconsistently across 12 weeks. Consistency beats volume every time.

During heavy work periods — project deadlines, year-end, travel weeks — drop to the two anchors only. No fill. No guilt. The 5-6 hours you get from two focused sessions is enough to maintain fitness through a rough patch. It's not enough to build, but building isn't the point during those weeks. Surviving with your fitness intact is.

Sample annual plan: June sportive + September century

Let's make this concrete. A rider targeting a June 21st sportive as their first A-race and a September 20th century as their second A-race, training 8-10 hours per week with a full-time job.

October (Weeks 1-4): End-of-season transition. Two weeks of completely unstructured riding — no power meter, no heart rate monitor, ride when and where you feel like it. Weeks 3-4, re-introduce gym work: single-leg press, lunges, hip thrusts, rows, press-ups, and core stability. Two gym sessions per week. Ride 4-5 hours total, all easy.

November (Weeks 5-8): Early base. Build cycling volume to 6-8 hours per week. Three to four rides: two short Zone 2 sessions (60-90 minutes), one longer weekend ride (2-2.5 hours), one optional easy spin. Continue gym work twice weekly. No structured intervals. If you're riding indoors, use the time for pedalling drills and cadence work.

December (Weeks 9-12): Mid base. Volume 7-9 hours. Weekend ride extends to 2.5-3 hours. Introduce one tempo session per week — 2x15 minutes at Zone 3, building to 2x20 by month's end. Gym work continues. Recovery week in the last week of December — it conveniently aligns with the holiday period. Use it.

January (Weeks 13-16): Late base. Volume 8-10 hours. Introduce sweet spot: 2x20 minutes at 88-93% FTP once per week. Weekend ride extends to 3-3.5 hours. One tempo session, one sweet spot session, one long ride, plus easy fill. Gym shifts from building to maintenance — one session per week at controlled loads with good form. Field test at the end of week 16 to reset zones.

February (Weeks 17-20): Early build. Two quality sessions per week — one threshold (3x10 at 95-105% FTP), one sweet spot or tempo. Weekend long ride with one or two race-pace efforts embedded. Volume holds at 8-10 hours. This is where the work-calendar pressure starts to bite, because February is often a busy month professionally. Protect the two anchors. Let the fill flex.

March (Weeks 21-24): Mid build. Threshold sessions progress (4x10 at FTP, or 2x20). Introduce VO2 max work: 5x4 minutes at 110-120% FTP with equal recovery. One high-intensity session, one threshold session, one long ride with efforts. Recovery week at week 24. B-race possible in late March if one's available — ride it on training fitness, no taper.

April (Weeks 25-28): Late build. Race-specific sessions matched to the June sportive demands — if it's hilly, long climbing efforts at target power. If it's flat and fast, sustained threshold work. Two quality sessions per week. Weekend ride includes event-simulation efforts. Field test at end of week 26 to update zones. Recovery week at week 28.

May (Weeks 29-32): Final build and sharpening. Quality over quantity. Sessions get shorter and sharper — race-openers, over-unders, short VO2 efforts. Volume starts to reduce in the final two weeks. B-races in May serve as dress rehearsals. Practice nutrition strategy, pacing, and kit.

June 1-21 (Weeks 33-35): Peak and taper. Volume drops 40-50% in the final 10 days. Two to three short, sharp sessions to keep the legs firing. Full rest day two days before the event. Nutrition dialled. Kit sorted. A-race #1 on June 21st.

June 22-July 5 (Weeks 35-36): Post-race transition. Five to seven days of easy, unstructured riding. No intervals, no data. If you want to spin for an hour, spin. If you want to sit on the sofa, sit. Then 7-10 days of easy structured riding to rebuild routine without intensity.

July (Weeks 37-40): Rebuild base. You're not starting from zero — the aerobic foundation is still there. Rebuild volume to 8-9 hours. Re-introduce sweet spot by week 39. One moderate-intensity session per week. Long ride returns to 2.5-3 hours. This phase is shorter than winter base because you're maintaining, not building from scratch.

August (Weeks 41-45): Compressed build. Five weeks targeting the September century demands — sustained aerobic power, pacing discipline, fuelling at effort. Two quality sessions per week: one at threshold, one with century-specific sustained efforts (e.g. 3x30 minutes at 85-90% FTP). Weekend long ride extends to 4+ hours with practice fuelling. Recovery week at week 44.

September 1-20 (Weeks 46-48): Taper and A-race #2. Same taper protocol as June. Volume drops progressively. Sharpening sessions only. September 20th: century ride. Execute the plan you've built all year.

September 21-October (Weeks 48-52): End-of-season transition. Two weeks completely off structured training. Then ease back into the gym and easy riding as the cycle begins again.

That's 52 weeks. Every phase has a purpose. Every recovery period is mapped. The two A-races sit 13 weeks apart — enough space for genuine recovery, rebuilding, and a proper second peak.

The three recovery periods you cannot skip

The annual plan has three non-negotiable recovery windows. Skip one and you'll probably get away with it. Skip two and the season falls apart.

Post-A-race recovery (5-7 days). After each priority event, your body needs to clear the accumulated fatigue of the taper and race effort. This isn't just physical — it's neurological and motivational. Riders who jump straight back into training after a big event often feel fantastic for 10 days (residual taper fitness) before crashing hard.

Mid-season recovery (5-7 days). Between your A-races, usually in July or August, you need a genuine reset. This often aligns naturally with a family holiday — use that. Don't sneak in turbo sessions at 6am in the hotel gym. Rest. The rebuild phase starts fresh because you actually recovered.

End-of-season transition (10-14 days). The longest recovery period of the year. Unstructured riding or complete rest for two weeks. Gym re-introduction in the second week if you want it. This protects against the cumulative fatigue of a full season and sets up the following year's base phase. Riders who train through October and November without a break arrive at December already carrying six months of fatigue debt. By February, they're wondering why their power numbers haven't responded to base training. The answer is usually that they never actually recovered from the previous season.

What the models agree on

Traditional, block, and polarised approaches differ on structure and intensity distribution. But they converge on several principles that matter more than the model you choose:

Specificity increases over time. Every model moves from general to specific as the target event approaches. Early training is broad. Late training mimics the demands of the race.

Recovery is productive. Adaptation happens during rest, not during load. Every model builds recovery into the structure — whether that's a recovery week every third or fourth week (traditional), a recovery phase between blocks (block), or the large volume of easy riding that dominates a polarised distribution.

Progressive overload, then deload. Training stress must increase over time to force adaptation, then decrease to allow it. No model prescribes the same load indefinitely.

The plan is a guide, not a law. Issurin, Friel, and Seiler would all tell you the same thing: if you're fatigued, rest. If life intervenes, adapt. The best coaches in the world adjust plans weekly based on how the athlete responds. Your annual plan should be written in pencil.

Building your plan this week

You don't need coaching software or a sports science degree. You need a calendar and an honest assessment of your available hours.

Step one: identify your A-races. Write the dates down.

Step two: count backwards 20 weeks from the first A-race. That's where structured preparation begins.

Step three: divide those 20 weeks into base (8-10 weeks), build (8-10 weeks), and peak/taper (2 weeks). Mark the phase boundaries.

Step four: map your recovery periods. Post-A-race, mid-season, end-of-season. Put them on the calendar now, before the season starts.

Step five: identify your two anchor sessions per week. Which days work for the quality midweek session and the weekend long ride? Block those out.

Step six: fill the remaining training days with flexible volume that bends around your life.

That's an annual plan. It's not perfect — no plan survives first contact with reality completely intact. But it's a structure, and a structure is what separates riders who peak at the right time from riders who just train and hope.
