One rest day sits in the middle. The other six, you ride.

This is not a single sportive where you empty the tank and recover on the sofa for a week. It is a multi-day stage event where the accumulated fatigue of day two shapes how you climb on day four, and the rider who collapses on day five almost always made their mistake on day one. The culture is Italian — pasta parties, espresso at the start, Speck and apple strudel at the feed stations, timed stages with a social atmosphere where finishing matters more than placing. What the Giro delle Dolomiti Actually Demands

Six stages. Approximately 600 kilometres. Between 15,000 and 18,000 metres of total climbing depending on the year's route. One rest day mid-week — usually day four — and six days where you clip in, roll out of Bolzano or the surrounding Adige Valley towns, and climb.

Individual stages range from 80 to 130km with 1,500 to 3,500 metres of climbing per day. Shorter stages pack steeper passes into less distance. Longer stages string together three or four cols with valley descents between them. Time on the bike each day runs from three and a half hours for strong riders on the shorter stages to seven hours for steady riders on the big days. Multiply that across six stages and you are looking at 25-40 hours of saddle time in a week.

The altitude is the variable most riders underestimate. The Dolomite passes do not top out at 1,500m and call it a day. The Stelvio reaches 2,758m. Passo Giau hits 2,236m. Pordoi sits at 2,239m. Fedaia at 2,057m. Gardena at 2,121m. Falzarego at 2,105m. You are spending significant portions of every stage above 2,000m, where the partial pressure of oxygen drops enough to reduce your sustainable power by 5-8% compared to sea level. For a rider with a 260W FTP, that is 13-21 watts gone. On a 45-minute climb, that power loss translates to 3-5 extra minutes per ascent.

Temperature swings are extreme. Valleys around Bolzano can hit 35C by midday in July. Pass summits at 2,200m sit at 8-12C. Descend into a shaded valley on the north side of a pass and the temperature can drop another five degrees. Stage-by-Stage: What to Expect

The route changes year to year, but the stage profiles fall into recognisable categories. Knowing the patterns matters more than memorising a specific parcours.

Valley Start Stages

Two or three stages begin with 20-30km of valley riding along the Adige or Isarco valleys before the first climb. The road is flat or gently rolling, the group spreads out, and the pace is social. The temptation is to ride at 200 watts because the group around you is riding at 200 watts. The discipline is to ride at 150 and save the legs for what comes after the valley. These stages typically feature two major passes with a valley between them, totalling 90-110km and 2,000-2,800m of climbing.

Pure Climbing Stages

At least one stage — sometimes two — is a short, dense day of climbing. Eighty to ninety-five kilometres with 2,500-3,500m of elevation packed in. Three or four passes linked by short descents. Sella, Gardena, Campolongo, and Pordoi in a single loop. Or Giau and Falzarego chained together. These are the days that define the event. Individual climbs run 8-15km at 6-10% average. The cumulative effect across a day with four climbs is more demanding than any single ascent, because you never fully recover on the descents — 12-15 minutes of cold, technical descending does not restore glycogen.

The Stelvio Stage

When the Stelvio features — and it features in most editions — it dominates the day. The climb from Prato allo Stelvio is 24.3km at 7.1% average, topping out at 2,758m. It is the longest sustained climb in the event by a margin. At 3.0 W/kg, the ascent takes approximately 90-100 minutes. At 3.5 W/kg, closer to 75 minutes. The altitude above 2,400m is where you feel it most — the final 8km climb through thin air at gradients that sit around 8-9%. The climb rewards steady power far more than it rewards enthusiasm.

The Final Stage

Day six. Whatever the profile says on paper, this stage is the hardest of the week because your body carries five days of climbing in its legs. A 90km stage with 2,000m of climbing on day six feels harder than a 120km stage with 3,000m on day two. Every climb starts at a lower baseline of muscular capacity. Every descent taxes concentration that is already depleted. The riders who planned their week — conserving on days one and two, recovering properly every evening — ride this stage well. The riders who raced the early stages ride this one on empty. 16-Week Training Framework

This build assumes a starting base of 8-10 hours per week with climbing already part of your regular riding. If you are starting below that, extend the base block to eight weeks and adjust total duration to 20 weeks.

Weeks 1-4: Base Consolidation

Volume: 9-12 hours/week across 4-5 rides. Eighty per cent in Zone 2.

The base block for a multi-day Dolomites event needs climbing from the start. Every long ride should include sustained uphill — not one big ascent, but multiple shorter climbs of 15-30 minutes with descents between them, mimicking the rhythm of a Dolomite stage. Build the long ride from 3 hours to 4.5 hours across the block with 1,000-1,500m of climbing per session.

Mid-week quality: One tempo session. 2x20 minutes at 76-82% FTP with five minutes recovery. Steady seated effort. Keep cadence at 80-90rpm and resist any urge to push above the target.

Strength: Two gym sessions per week, 25-30 minutes each. Bulgarian split lunges (3x10 each leg), step-ups onto a box at knee height (3x12 each leg), leg press (3x12), single-leg hip thrusts (3x10 each side), and a core circuit — plank, side plank, bird dog, dead bug, 30 seconds each, three rounds. Build the chassis. The mountain forces are eccentric — you need resilient muscles, not maximum strength.

Weeks 5-8: Build Phase

Volume: 11-14 hours/week. Two quality sessions appear. Back-to-back weekends begin.

Threshold climbing. 3x12 minutes at 90-95% FTP on gradient, building to 3x15 minutes by week 8. Do these on a real hill. The muscular recruitment at 7-10% gradient is measurably different from flat-road or turbo threshold work — the glute loading changes, the seated position demands more from your lower back, and the neuromuscular patterning is specific to the event.

Tempo with gradient changes. One session per week: find a road or route that undulates. Ride 60-90 minutes continuously at 75-82% FTP, adjusting cadence and power only when the road forces it. Do not surge on the rises. Do not coast on the dips. Train the body to hold steady internal effort while external conditions shift — this is the specific skill of riding Dolomite stages where the gradient changes every kilometre.

Back-to-back weekends. From week 6, Saturday is 4-5 hours with 1,200-1,800m climbing. Sunday is 3-4 hours with 800-1,200m climbing. Sunday should feel compromised. Legs heavy, power down 5-10% from Saturday. That is the signal that the training is working — you are teaching the body to perform under fatigue. If Sunday feels identical to Saturday, push Saturday harder the following week.

Strength: Drop to one gym session per week. Same exercises, same sets, maintaining rather than building.

Weeks 9-13: Peak Phase

Volume: 13-16 hours/week. This is the block that builds multi-day capacity.

By week 10, your weekend structure looks like this: Saturday 5-6 hours with 1,800-2,500m of climbing, including at least two sustained climbs of 30+ minutes. Sunday 4-5 hours with 1,500-2,000m of climbing at controlled sportive pace. Three of these back-to-back weekends across the block, with a lighter week between each. If you live somewhere flat, travel for these weekends. The eccentric muscle damage from real gradient climbing, the body position demands, the descending skills — none of this can be replicated on a turbo with gradient simulation.

Mid-week quality. One session of 3x10 minutes at 95-100% FTP. One session of graduated climbing repeats — 5x6 minutes at 8%+ gradient, first two at 85% FTP, last three at 95% FTP, three minutes recovery between each. The graduated structure simulates how a Dolomite stage loads you: moderate early climbing followed by hard late climbing on already-tired legs.

Altitude exposure. If you have access to an altitude tent, three weeks of sleeping at simulated 2,200-2,500m during this block provides measurable adaptation. If not, heat training partially mimics the cardiovascular stress — 6-8 turbo sessions in a hot room (30-35C) in the final five weeks before the event. Research from Santiago Lorenzo at the University of Oregon showed heat acclimation protocols improve time-trial performance at altitude by 5-8%. It is not a perfect substitute. It is a useful one.

Weeks 14-16: Taper

Volume drops. Week 14: 70% of peak volume. Week 15: 50% of peak volume. Week 16: 30% of peak volume.

Key Sessions That Simulate Multi-Day Demands

Four sessions carry the most transfer to the Giro delle Dolomiti. Every other session in the plan supports these.

Back-to-back climbing weekends. Saturday 5-6 hours, 2,000m+ climbing. Sunday 4-5 hours, 1,500m+ climbing. Both at controlled pace — 70-80% FTP on the climbs, not threshold. This is the most important training stimulus in the entire plan. Nothing else replicates the demand of overnight recovery followed by another long day in the mountains. Run this structure three times in the peak block, separated by easier weeks. The adaptation is not just physical — you learn how to eat, sleep, and recover between hard days, and that skill is worth more than another interval session.

Threshold on tired legs. Sunday morning after Saturday's big ride. Warm up for 30 minutes easy, then ride 3x10 minutes at 90-95% FTP on gradient. Your power will be 5-10% below your fresh numbers. That is the point. You are training the body to produce quality work under residual fatigue — exactly the demand of stages four, five, and six. If you can hold 90% FTP for 10-minute efforts on tired legs in training, you can hold 80% FTP on the Pordoi on day five of the event.

Extended climbing at altitude effort. Find the longest sustained climb you can access. Ride it at 75-80% FTP for 40-60 minutes, seated, steady cadence of 70-80rpm. If you do not have a long climb, simulate it on the turbo at 6-8% gradient for the same duration at the same power. This session builds the specific muscular endurance for climbs like the Stelvio — long, steady, unrelenting.

Recovery ride discipline. The day after any hard session, ride 60-90 minutes at Z1 — below 65% FTP, heart rate below 130bpm. Properly easy. Not social-pace easy where you chat with a mate and accidentally ride at 170 watts. Actually recovering easy. The quality of your easy days in training predicts the quality of your recovery between stages during the event. If you cannot hold yourself back on a recovery ride, you cannot recover between Dolomite stages.

Recovery Strategy Between Stages

This is where the Giro delle Dolomiti is won or lost, and it has nothing to do with power numbers. The rider who finishes strong on day six is the rider who recovered best on days one through five.

The 30-minute window. Within 30 minutes of finishing every stage — starting from day one, not from the day you feel tired — consume 30-40g protein and 80-120g carbohydrate. A recovery shake, a plate of pasta at the finish area, a sandwich from the hotel. Get it in. Glycogen resynthesis rates are highest in this window, and the gap between riders who hit it and riders who shower first then eat is measurable by day four.

Between-stage meals. A proper sit-down meal within two hours of finishing. Carbohydrate-dominant — pasta, rice, bread, potatoes — with lean protein. An evening meal that is again carb-heavy. Total daily intake should reach 8-10g of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight. For a 75kg rider, that is 600-750g of carbs across the day. That is a lot of pasta. Eat it anyway.

Compression and positioning. Compression socks or sleeves for the evenings. Legs up the wall for 15 minutes after every stage — before the shower, before the meal. Simple passive recovery that assists venous return. A foam roller for calves, quads, and hip flexors — 10 minutes, nothing aggressive. If massage is available at the event village, book it from day one. Do not wait until you feel you need it.

Sleep. Eight hours minimum. Lights out by 21:30. This is harder than it sounds in an Italian mountain village in July where the social programme runs late and the espresso flows freely. Prioritise sleep over socialising on race nights. The bar will still be there after the final stage. Use an eye mask — South Tyrolean summer light starts early and hotel curtains are optimistic.

When to skip a stage. If you wake up with a resting heart rate 15+ beats above your normal baseline, or if you have sharp localised pain (not just general fatigue), consider the rest day. The event structure allows it — you can skip one stage and continue the next day. Pushing through a day when your body is sending alarm signals costs you two or three subsequent days, not one. The goal is finishing the week, not ticking every stage regardless of cost.

Nutrition and Fuelling Strategy

On-bike fuelling. 80-90g of carbohydrate per hour, every stage, from the first hour. Two gels and a bar per hour, or a 90g/hour drink mix paired with solid food every 90 minutes. Train your gut to this volume on at least six long rides before the event. Stage one of a multi-day mountain event is not the place to trial 90g/hour for the first time.

Italian feed stations. They are generous and they are unpredictable. Expect water, fruit, biscuits, sometimes small panini or pieces of cake. The quality and timing varies — some stations are every 25km, others are spaced 40km apart depending on the stage geography. Carry your own fuelling for the first two hours of every stage. After that, supplement with what the organisers provide. Do not rely on them entirely. A missed feed station on a 3,000m climbing day is a bonk waiting to happen.

Daily totals during event week. 8-10g carbohydrate per kg body weight per day. 1.5-2g protein per kg body weight per day. This total includes on-bike and off-bike intake combined. Track it for the first two days until you develop a feel for the volume. Most riders undereat at multi-day events because fatigue suppresses appetite and altitude compounds the effect. Set a timer. Eat to a schedule, not to hunger.

Hydration at altitude. Above 2,000m the air is drier and your breathing rate increases. Both accelerate fluid loss. Aim for 750ml-1L per hour on stages with significant time above 2,000m. Add an electrolyte tab to every bottle — sodium losses in Dolomite summer heat are substantial. The thirst signal arrives late at altitude. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already 2-3% dehydrated, and a 2% fluid deficit reduces power output by approximately 6%. Kit and Equipment for the Dolomites

Gearing. Compact crankset — 50/34 — paired with a cassette of 32 teeth minimum on the back. A 34-tooth cassette is better. What feels comfortable at 9% on fresh legs on day one feels very different at 9% on day-five legs when your effective FTP has dropped 5-8% from accumulated fatigue. Test your gearing on the steepest local climb you have at the end of a 5-hour ride. If you are grinding below 55rpm in your easiest gear, fit a larger cassette before you fly.

Clothing layers. Start each stage with arm warmers in the jersey pocket. Carry a quality rain cape — not a gilet, a full rain cape — in a back pocket or bento box on every stage regardless of the forecast. Dolomite afternoon thunderstorms materialise fast. Rain at 2,200m with a 15km descent ahead of you is a hypothermia risk in a jersey alone. Knee warmers for the first and last stages when early morning starts and late finishes dip temperatures. A thin skull cap under the helmet for descents from passes above 2,400m where wind chill pushes effective temperature towards freezing even in July.

Tyres. 28mm minimum. Italian mountain roads are generally good but not uniformly smooth — some passes have rough patches, loose gravel on switchback apexes, and expansion joints on tunnelled sections. Wider tyres at lower pressure (5.5-6 bar for a 75kg rider on 28mm) provide better grip on cold, wet descents and absorb more road vibration across a week of riding. Continental GP5000 or equivalent in 28mm is a common and reliable choice. Carry a spare tube and a mini pump — mechanical support exists but the wait can cost 30-40 minutes on a remote pass.

Daily carry. Phone (fully charged — the Dolomites have reliable mobile coverage on most passes). Cash (some feed stations and cafes on the course are cash only). Two bottles minimum. Sun cream. A small zip-lock bag with your hotel room card and event number. Keep the pockets light. Every gram you carry up the Stelvio, you carry for 24 kilometres.

Common Mistakes at Multi-Day Dolomites Events

Racing day one. Fresh legs and adrenaline produce power numbers that your body cannot sustain across six stages. The rider who attacks the Sella at 95% FTP on day one is the rider who cannot turn the pedals over on the Stelvio on day five. Stage one should feel restrained. You should finish thinking you left 15-20 minutes on the road. That margin is what keeps you climbing on day six.

Underfuelling recovery. Most riders eat well on the bike. Fewer eat well between stages. The 30-minute recovery window, the 8-10g/kg daily carbohydrate target, the protein at every meal — skip this on days one and two when you feel fine, and the debt arrives on day four as a crack you cannot ride through. Recovery nutrition is not optional from the first stage. The compounding nature of glycogen deficit across a week is brutal and invisible until it suddenly is not.

Ignoring the rain cape. A clear morning in the Adige Valley says nothing about conditions at 2,300m at 15:00. Afternoon convective storms are a statistical near-certainty across a week of July riding in the Dolomites. One storm without a rain cape on a high pass — wet jersey, cold wind, 20-minute descent — can drop your core temperature enough to ruin the rest of the stage and compromise the following day. The rain cape weighs 80 grams. Carry it.

Wrong gearing for day-five legs. An 11-28 cassette that works on a single-day sportive becomes inadequate on day five of a stage race. Your FTP drops 5-8% from accumulated fatigue. The same 10% gradient that you rode at 68rpm on fresh legs becomes 54rpm on tired legs with the same gearing. Below 50rpm on a sustained climb, the muscular load per pedal stroke becomes damaging rather than training. Fit a 32 or 34 before you go. The weight cost is negligible. The finishing benefit is real.

Not acclimatising to altitude. Arriving the night before and expecting your sea-level power numbers to hold above 2,000m is a planning error, not bad luck. Altitude reduces sustainable power by 5-8% for most riders, and the effect is more pronounced on multi-hour efforts than on short tests. Arrive 3-5 days early if possible. Ride easy at altitude. Let the body begin adjusting. Even partial acclimatisation — higher red blood cell production, improved oxygen transport — helps measurably across a week of mountain stages.

Neglecting descending. The Dolomites are descended as much as they are climbed. Twelve to fifteen minutes of technical descending from a 2,200m pass on cold, tired legs requires concentration, skill, and confidence. Riders who tense up on descents waste energy gripping the bars and braking too early. Riders who descend well save 2-3 minutes per pass and arrive at the bottom fresher. Practise descending on training rides when you are tired — the last descent of a long day, not the first — and note where your confidence drops. That is the skill gap to close before July.
