The terrain is open agricultural plains with short, punchy rollers that never stop coming. Nothing is steep enough to slow you down. Everything is exposed enough to wear you out.
The roads are the defining feature. Minimum-maintenance is the county classification for roads the local authority has functionally abandoned. That means anything from packed limestone to loose gravel to stretches of deep sand where your rear wheel buries itself and your speed halves. The surface changes every few miles, sometimes mid-corner. If you've ridden gravel exclusively in Europe — fire roads in Spain, white roads in Tuscany, packed tracks in Ireland — the Nebraska roads are a different animal. They are wide, open, and unpredictable underfoot.
August heat is the other constant. Lincoln sits on the Great Plains at 40 degrees north, and August temperatures routinely hit 32-38C with humidity that pushes the real-feel above 40C. Long-ride capacity. You should have ridden at least 6-7 hours in a single training ride before race day, ideally on gravel or rough surface, ideally in heat. Not five hours on smooth road in 18C drizzle. Six-plus hours on a surface that vibrates, with fuelling rehearsed and gut tested. The 150-mile distance puts most riders on the bike for 8-12 hours. The 12-Week Framework
Three blocks of four weeks each. The structure assumes a starting base of 6-8 hours/week and builds to 10-14 hours at peak.
Weeks 1-4: Base
Volume: 7-9 hours/week.
Four to five rides, 80% in Zone 2. The aerobic foundation that everything else sits on. Easy stays easy — the temptation to grind base miles on gravel 'because it feels like real training' is how you arrive at week 6 already fatigued with nothing in the legs for the quality sessions that matter.
Anchor session: a long Zone 2 ride that builds from 3 hours to 4.5 hours over the block. At least half of the weekend miles should be on gravel or rough surface — the durability, the vibration, the handling, the line-choice instincts. These are skills that tarmac does not build.
Midweek: two shorter sessions of 60-90 minutes, Zone 2. One optional core and upper-body stability session — plank variations, single-leg work, hip stability band exercises. Nothing heavy. The goal is a trunk that holds position at hour 8 when everything else is tired.
Weeks 5-8: Build
Volume: 9-12 hours/week.
Two quality sessions appear alongside the Zone 2 base. One threshold session (3x12 minutes at 95-100% FTP, building to 3x15 minutes by the end of the block). One sustained-tempo session (2x25 minutes at 82-87% FTP). The threshold work builds the top-end capacity for surges, group efforts, and the harder sections of the course. The sustained tempo is your all-day ceiling — the intensity you can hold when you're alone, into the wind, at mile 90.
Long ride climbs to 5-6 hours with full fuelling rehearsal: 80g carbs per hour, electrolytes, real food in the back half. This is where the gut training starts. Your stomach needs to learn to process fuel while you're riding at tempo in heat. Three rehearsals at full intake across this block is the minimum.
If you're fitting a Gravel Worlds build around a full-time job, the weekend gravel miles are non-negotiable — you need the surface, the handling, the real-world conditions. But the midweek threshold and tempo sessions can be done on the trainer. Weeks 9-11: Specific
Volume: 10-14 hours/week at peak. This is the decisive block.
The long ride extends to 6-7 hours, ideally on rough surface, ideally in heat. One of these rides — ideally in week 9 or 10 — should be a full dress rehearsal: the bike you'll race, the tyres you'll race, the food you'll carry, the bottles, the repair kit. Add one back-to-back weekend: Saturday 5-6 hours gravel with a threshold block early in the ride, Sunday 2-3 hours easy on tired legs. The stacked fatigue teaches the body to recover overnight and ride again — a specific demand of any event where the back half is harder than the front.
Heat acclimation starts in week 9 if you're travelling from a cooler climate. Ten to fourteen sessions of 60-90 minutes in artificially warm conditions — trainer in a closed room, extra layers, no fan, ambient temperature above 28C. The adaptations (lower core temperature, earlier sweating, reduced heart-rate drift) take 10-14 days of exposure to consolidate. Start early enough that they're locked in by race week.
Week 12: Taper
Volume drops 40-50%. Keep two short quality sessions (2x8 minutes at threshold, 3x90 seconds at VO2max) to maintain sharpness. No rides longer than 90 minutes. Travel to Lincoln 2-3 days before the race. Pre-ride 20-30 miles of the course to feel the surface, dial final tyre pressures, test your carrying setup. Sleep in your race-day rhythm. The fitness is in — all you can do now is arrive rested, fed, and ready.
Mechanical Resilience
This is where Gravel Worlds separates from a European sportive. There is no neutral service. There is no team car. If your tyre goes at mile 60, you fix it yourself or you walk. The riders who finish without mechanical delay are the ones who prepared for mechanicals in training, not the ones who assumed it wouldn't happen to them.
Tyres. 40-45mm reinforced tubeless. The Nebraska surface mix is sharp limestone fragments, loose agricultural gravel, and sandy sections that demand volume. Narrower tyres cut on the limestone, bounce on the loose stuff, and sink in the sand. Wider casings with reinforced sidewalls (look for ERT, EXO, or similar casing designations) absorb the worst and keep rolling. Run tubeless sealant fresh — replace it 48 hours before the race so it's still liquid and reactive.
Repair kit. Two plug kits (bacon-strip style), two CO2 canisters plus a small manual pump as backup, one spare tube for catastrophic failure, a tyre lever, a chain quick link, and a multi-tool with 4mm and 5mm Allen keys. Some riders carry a small section of old tyre casing as a boot for slashed sidewalls — it weighs nothing and saves a race. Practice a roadside plug-and-CO2 reseat in training at least twice. The riders who DNF from a repairable flat are almost always the ones who never practised the repair under pressure.
Drivetrain. Clean chain, fresh cables if you're running mechanical, derailleur hanger checked for alignment. The vibration of 150 miles of gravel loosens things that stay tight on road. A spare derailleur hanger is cheap insurance and weighs less than a gel.
Pre-ride check. The evening before: full tyre inspection for embedded debris, brake-pad wear, bolt torque on stem, bars, seatpost, and bottle cages. Every bolt. The rider whose bottle cage falls off at mile 40 loses a bottle in a race where bottles are survival equipment.
Nutrition Strategy
Gravel Worlds is a self-sufficient fuelling problem. No drop bags. Minimal aid. You carry everything from the start, resupply opportunistically if a small-town shop appears on the route, and you manage a calorie deficit that compounds across 8-12 hours of riding in heat.
Calorie demand. A 75kg rider at 2.8-3.0 W/kg across 9-10 hours burns roughly 5,000-7,000 kcal. You cannot eat that on the bike. The goal is to narrow the gap: 80-100g of carbohydrate per hour from the gun, every hour, no exceptions. That's roughly 320-400 kcal per hour. Across a 9-hour ride, that's 720-900g of carbs consumed — around 2,900-3,600 kcal of carbohydrate alone. The remaining deficit is unavoidable. You minimise it; you don't eliminate it.

What to carry. Pre-mixed high-carb drink mix (80-90g carbs per 750ml bottle) in three bottles. Gels taped to the top tube or in a bento box — 8-12 gels. Two to three bars for the second half when the gut wants something solid. Salt tabs or electrolyte capsules — one every 30-45 minutes in heat. That's 2,500-3,000 kcal of on-bike nutrition. Some riders add a frame bag with an extra 4-6 gels and a backup bottle of mix as insurance.
Heat and hydration. Sweat rates in 35C heat reach 1.5-2.0 litres per hour. Three 750ml bottles give you 2.25 litres — roughly 75-90 minutes of hydration in peak heat before you're running dry. If the course offers water stops, refill everything. If it doesn't, you need to plan for that gap. Pre-loading with sodium (1,000-1,500mg in the hour before the start) improves fluid retention and delays the point where dehydration compounds.
Sodium. The silent problem. Kansas and Nebraska heat strips 1,200-1,800mg of sodium per hour through sweat. Gels and drink mix rarely cover it. Supplement with salt tabs — SaltStick, Precision Hydration, or similar — every 30-45 minutes. If you're not urinating every 2-3 hours, you're behind on fluids or sodium or both.
Gut training. Race day is not the day to discover your stomach rejects 90g/hour at intensity in heat. Three long training rides at full fuelling protocol before race week is the bar. Ideally those rides include at least one hot session. The gut adapts to high carbohydrate intake during exercise, but it needs repeated exposure — the adaptation is trainable, but it's not instant.
Common Mistakes
Racing the first 30 miles. The start of Gravel Worlds is fast. Groups form, adrenaline pushes the pace above plan, and riders who promised themselves disciplined pacing are 20 beats above endurance heart rate before mile 20. The watts you spend at mile 15 are the watts you don't have at mile 120. Let the groups go. Find a pace group that matches your target, sit in, and eat.
Carrying too little water. Two bottles is not enough for 150 miles in August heat with limited resupply. Three bottles minimum, ideally with a backup option (frame bag, jersey pocket bottle, hydration vest). Running dry at mile 80 with no resupply for another 30 miles is an emergency, not an inconvenience.
Skipping the heat prep. This is the most predictable failure pattern for riders travelling from cooler climates. You can be 3.5 W/kg with a perfect bike and still fall apart at mile 90 because your body is fighting a core temperature it has never managed before. Ten sessions of heat acclimation across three weeks costs almost nothing and changes the outcome of the day.
Running tyres under 40mm. What works on packed Cotswold bridleways does not work on Nebraska minimum-maintenance roads. The surface changes. It gets sandy. It gets sharp. Narrow tyres with light casings are the most common mechanical DNF cause at any long American gravel race, and it's a kit decision you made weeks before the start.
Not practising repairs. You will see riders standing on the side of the road, tyre off, sealant everywhere, with no idea how to plug a hole. They trained for months. They never once practised a roadside repair. Plug a tyre in training at least twice before race day. Time yourself. Get it under five minutes. That's the difference between a five-minute delay and a race-ending walk.
Ignoring the wind. Nebraska is flat and exposed. Headwinds and crosswinds across open farmland are constant. The riders who finish well are the ones who found a group to share the workload. The riders who went solo into a 25kph headwind because they 'wanted their own pace' arrive an hour later, having burned 30% more energy for the same speed. On exposed gravel, group riding is a survival tool.
Kit, Gearing, and Logistics
Bike. A gravel bike with reliable disc brakes and clearance for 45mm tyres. Fit matters more than frame material — you're on this thing for 8-12 hours. If you have not ridden a 6-hour day on your race bike, do that before you fly to Nebraska. Saddle issues at hour 7 are a race-ender.
Tyres. 40-45mm reinforced tubeless. Panaracer GravelKing SK+, Challenge Gravine Race, Rene Herse Endurance casing, Vittoria Terreno Dry — all proven on Midwest gravel. Start at 28-33psi depending on rider weight, and test on rough surface before race day. Too high and you bounce and lose grip in the loose sections. Too low and you risk rim strikes on the rocky stretches.
Gearing. A compact or sub-compact crankset (46/30 or 48/31) with a wide-range cassette (11-34 or 11-36). The climbs are not steep, but at mile 120 in heat you will want a gear that lets you sit and spin at 80rpm without fighting. Over-gearing is a common road-cyclist error on gravel — the surface rolling resistance is higher, and the power that pushed 42kph on road pushes 30kph on loose gravel. Gear for the speed you'll actually be doing, not the speed you do on tarmac.
Carrying capacity. Three bottle cages (two on the frame, one under the downtube or on a mount behind the saddle). A top-tube bag or bento box for gels and salt tabs. A small saddlebag or frame bag for the repair kit. A jersey pocket for a lightweight rain jacket or sun sleeves. Everything needs to be accessible without stopping — unzipping a saddlebag at mile 90 to find a gel is not a fuelling strategy.
Clothing. Lightweight summer kit. A bib you've ridden 6+ hours in without issues. Sun sleeves and a cycling cap for the exposed sections. Chamois cream applied generously before the start and carried for reapplication if needed. Sunscreen — SPF50, applied to the back of the neck, the arms, and the legs, reapplied at any longer stop.
Travel logistics. Fly into Lincoln or Omaha 2-3 days before. Build the bike, test-ride 20-30 miles of local gravel, confirm tyre pressures, confirm all systems. Eat normally — a large carbohydrate-heavy dinner the night before is the only protocol change. Sleep as close to the start as logistics allow. The early start means a pre-dawn wake-up, and an hour of driving before a 150-mile race is an hour of rest you didn't get.
