Nutrition Strategy

On-stage fuelling. 80-90g of carbohydrate per hour, every stage, every day. Two gels plus a bar each hour, or a 90g/hour drink mix paired with one solid item every 90 minutes. Hunger signals lag behind the deficit by 12-24 hours.
Pyrenean heat. Valley floors in the Pyrenees hit 30-35C in August and September. Fluid loss on a 130km stage through hot valleys with three cols can reach 1.5-2 litres per hour. Carry two bottles, refill at every feed station, and add electrolyte tabs. Dehydration compounds across a week faster than within a single day.
Kit and Equipment
Gearing. 34x32 minimum. 34x34 if your frame and derailleur accept it. Pyrenean gradients are steeper than Alpine averages, and by day five your climbing power sits at 85-90% of fresh-leg output. The same 10% ramp that you rode at 68rpm on day one becomes 55rpm on day five with the same gearing. Under-geared is the most common equipment mistake at this event. Common Mistakes
Racing day one. Fresh legs and adrenaline are a trap. The riders who attack stage one at 85-90% FTP on the climbs are the riders calling for the transfer van on stage five. Stage one should feel uncomfortably easy. Pace to 75-80% FTP on the climbs. No exceptions.
Underfuelling between stages. Eating 8-10g/kg carbs daily for seven consecutive days is difficult. The volume of food is abnormal. Many riders eat 5-6g/kg out of habit and accumulate a 1,500-2,000 calorie daily deficit. By day four the glycogen debt is real and no amount of on-bike gels can compensate. Force-feed if needed. Wrong gearing for Pyrenean gradients. An 11-28 cassette that works on a training ride becomes a punishment device on day five when a 10% ramp appears and your FTP has dropped 8% from accumulated fatigue. The Pyrenees are steeper than the Alps. Gear accordingly.
Ignoring weather. Riders who leave the hotel without arm warmers because the valley is 30C at 08:00 are the riders hypothermic on the Aubisque at 13:00 when the cloud rolls in.
