The instinct is always more — more intervals, more volume, a new plan. The Anatomy of a Plateau

A plateau is not a bad week. It's a sustained period — 8-12 weeks or longer — where performance stops responding to training. Short-term stalls are normal; your body improves in steps. The problem starts when the flat period doesn't end.

Plateaus take different forms. Your FTP sits in the same window no matter what you throw at it — the FTP plateau guide covers that specific problem in detail. Or your short-duration numbers look fine but anything over 90 minutes at tempo and you crack — a base-layer problem. Or your CTL keeps climbing while race results don't improve — usually pacing or durability, not raw fitness. Or nothing is obviously wrong but you haven't moved forward in six months. Each has a different root cause, and treating them all the same way is how a three-month stall becomes a twelve-month one.

The Five Real Causes of Cycling Plateaus

Five causes account for the vast majority of amateur cycling plateaus. Every one of them is fixable.

1. Training monotony

The single most common cause. Same sessions, same intensities, same weekly structure, month after month. Your body adapted to that stimulus six months ago. It has no reason to keep improving.

The fix is structured periodisation. Concentrate one stimulus into a focused 7-14-day block, recover, then shift to a different stimulus. John Wakefield confirmed this when I asked how he breaks riders loose: he restructures the mesocycle entirely. Been doing 2x20 threshold every Tuesday for four months? Switch to a VO2max block — 4x4 at 106-120% FTP — for two to three weeks. Then come back to threshold.

2. Inadequate recovery

This is where 60-70% of amateur plateaus actually live. Not in the training. In what happens between sessions. Sleep under seven hours suppresses growth hormone, raises cortisol, and impairs protein synthesis. Chronic energy deficit tells your body to prioritise survival over adaptation. Insufficient protein — most amateurs get roughly half the 1.6-2.0g per kilogram they need — means muscle repair simply doesn't complete.

Here's the good news: if recovery is the problem, the fix is fast. A structured recovery week — 40-50% volume reduction, short intensity touches, prioritised sleep extension — often produces more improvement than two months of modified training. Many riders break through in the first week back. The fitness was already there. The fatigue was hiding it. 3. Grey-zone drift

Professor Seiler gave this one a name. Grey-zone training is riding at an intensity too hard to build the aerobic base and too easy to stimulate threshold or VO2max improvement. Zone 3 — roughly 76-90% FTP — feels productive. That's the trap. But it doesn't efficiently target any specific system.

Most amateurs who plateau are spending 40-60% of their time here. A Zone 2 ride for a 280W rider should feel almost embarrassingly slow — 155-210 watts. Most "easy rides" sit at 220-240. Not easy. Not hard. Just fatiguing enough to wreck Thursday's intervals. The fix is polarisation. Easy rides properly easy. Hard sessions properly hard. The FTP Zone Calculator sets accurate boundaries. 4. Life stress masquerading as a fitness problem

Your body maintains a single stress budget. Dan Lorang described it on the podcast as a stress bucket — training, work, relationships, sleep debt all pour into the same one. A restructure at work, a sick child, a house move — these draw from the same hormonal reservoir as your interval sessions. I've seen riders bring twelve weeks of perfectly executed training and wonder why nothing improved. Then you learn they changed jobs, moved house, and had a new baby in the same period. The training was fine. The total stress load was catastrophic.

5. A ceiling you haven't trained above

Your threshold power is limited by the ceiling above it — your VO2max. If you only ever train at threshold, FTP stalls because the ceiling hasn't moved. The 4x4 VO2max protocol is the most research-validated approach to pushing it higher. Dan Lorang confirmed his athletes cycle between VO2max and threshold blocks, not one or the other. The Three-Layer Diagnostic

Every coach I've spoken to uses a version of the same framework. Three layers, checked in order. The order matters because each layer masks the one beneath it.

Layer 1: Recovery. Is the body absorbing the training? Sleep, nutrition, protein, HRV trends over 30 days, subjective energy. The Recovery Readiness Screen walks you through this.

Layer 2: Training stimulus. Is the training still forcing adaptation? Check for monotony, grey-zone drift, missing VO2max work, and lack of progressive overload. The Training Load Calculator shows whether your CTL has been progressing or just oscillating.

Layer 3: Non-training stressors. Work stress, sleep debt, relationship strain, health issues like iron deficiency or thyroid dysfunction — all suppress adaptation even when the training is well designed.

If Layer 1 is broken, changing Layer 2 won't help. If Layer 3 is the issue, both other layers will look suspicious even though neither is the cause. Joe Friel put it to me simply: "Start with sleep and food. Nine times out of ten, the answer is there."

Plateaus After 40

You're 42 or 47 or 53, the watts aren't moving, and the voice in the back of your head says: "Maybe this is just what happens." The data says otherwise. The decline most people fear is far slower than they think, and a large portion of what looks like ageing is actually accumulated training mistakes catching up as recovery capacity narrows.

Here's what actually changes, from the research and from conversations with Joe Friel and Dr David Lipman on the podcast. Recovery takes longer — a 45-year-old processing the same training load as a 25-year-old takes longer to return cortisol to baseline. VO2max declines if unattended, but significantly slower in athletes who keep including high-intensity work — the loss is conditional, not inevitable. Muscle mass drops without resistance work — single-leg press, step-ups, lunges, bodyweight exercises all counter this without heavy barbell loading. Joe Friel's position is clear: masters riders don't need less intensity. They need more recovery between intense sessions. Adding a third easy day between hard efforts often produces more progress than adding a third hard session.

The Mental Plateau Nobody Talks About

There's a version of the plateau that doesn't show up in any metric. Your legs are fine. Your power numbers are reasonable. But you've stopped believing you can improve.

This is the identity plateau — when a rider quietly stops seeing themselves as someone getting better and starts managing what they have. "Not Done Yet" exists because of this. Tools That Help You Find the Problem

Guessing wastes months. These four tools shorten the diagnostic:

FTP Zone Calculator — Audit your ride files against accurate zone boundaries. More than 15-20% in Zone 3? Grey-zone drift is a probable contributor.

Training Load Calculator (CTL/ATL/TSB) — If CTL has risen 15-20 points in 12 weeks without performance improvement, the problem is durability or fatigue, not fitness. If CTL is flat, the stimulus isn't sufficient.

Recovery Readiness Screen — The Layer 1 audit: sleep quality, nutritional adequacy, HRV trends, subjective energy, mood.

Training Readiness Check — A daily signal combining training load and life stress. When readiness is consistently suppressed, match intensity to current capacity rather than changing the programme.


Recovery-driven plateaus resolve fastest — often 2-4 weeks with a structured recovery block and sleep extension. Grey-zone drift takes 6-8 weeks of polarised training to correct. Training monotony breaks within 4-8 weeks once you introduce block periodisation. VO2max ceiling issues need 6-12 weeks of targeted blocks. Life-stress plateaus resolve when the stressor does — or when you learn to match intensity to total load.

The riders who break through fastest diagnose accurately and resist the urge to change everything at once. Pick one layer. Fix it. Give it eight weeks. The riders who stay stuck keep changing their plan every three weeks without addressing the underlying cause.

A training-driven plateau typically resolves within 4-8 weeks once the limiter is addressed — whether that's adding genuine recovery, changing the training stimulus, or fixing a fuelling gap. Plateaus that last longer often have a lifestyle root: chronic sleep debt, unmanaged stress, or an underlying health issue like iron deficiency.

What is the fastest way to break through a cycling plateau?+

There's no shortcut, but the highest-leverage move is almost always more recovery, not more training. After that, audit your training polarity (are your easy days actually easy?), check your fuelling, and introduce a stimulus your body hasn't seen — VO2max intervals if you've been grinding sweet spot, or genuine Zone 2 volume if you've been smashing intervals every ride.
